LNER Quad Art Poster Header
I am new to this forum, and therefore I am not sure whether this is the correct place.
I collect railwayana, and have a number of LNER & NER items. I recently purchased a Quad Art Poster Header enamel sign. Unfortunately it has a couple of chips, which I would like to restore.
Does anyone in the UK know of a automotive colour that is similar to LNER blue? I've been told to visit the local motor factors shop, but I didn't want to trapse in with a 5 foot by 6 inch sign under my arm!!!
Thank you

If there are only a couple of small chips then you are not going to need a pint of paint. Halford etc sell small sample pots for fixing chips in car paintwork so one of those would do the job, even if you had to buy two or three to get the exact match.picture_man36 wrote:I am new to this forum, and therefore I am not sure whether this is the correct place.

I'm intrigued, what's an LNER Quad Art Poster Header?

Re: LNER Quad Art Poster Header
Its about 5 ft long by about 6 inches high in blue with the lettering L N E R enamelled on it. Its made of steel, which is then enamelled, and then the words added in. They were used on the top of notice boards, advertising boards, and above advertising posters. Its in good used nick with no signs of tampering. It will go on my wall above my carriage prints etc when I've made a mount for it, and when I've touched it up, and t - cutted it.
If you send me your email address I'll send you a photo of it.
I wasn't sure whether there were any railwayana collectors on here who may have already found a near match with an automotive paint. I've been in motor factor places before with bits, and anyone would have thought that I was some sort of pervert asking for an unscrupulous act!!! Not just looking for paint. Why are people who have an interest in Railways always labelled anoraks by the narrow minded????

I was also puzzled by the name of this item. Though I remember the Quad-Arts very well and travelled in them countless times on the Kings Cross suburban services, I cannot recall any such posters, headers or similar items in or on the carriages unless you count the coloured prints that were on the partitions between the compartments. An enamel sign of the shape size and colour mentioned in the description sounds to me like something that might have been fixed to buildings on a station, so I'm still wondering about the connection with the Quad-Arts.
Re: LNER Quad Art Poster Header
Can it be that the term Quad Art relates to the size of the poster that the board was designed to display?
Only a hunch, but back in the distant past there seemed to be a wealth of different paper sizes used, each with it's individual name.

Re: LNER Quad Art Poster Header
I agree with lead_plug that the Quad Art bit refers to poster sizes. Quad Art as a size doesn’t exist, so I expect this is an error. The Quad paper sizes are as follows:
Quad Foolscap = 27 inches x 34 inches
Quad Crown = 30 inches x 40 inches
Quad Demy = 35 inches x 45 inches
Quad Medium = 36 inches x 46 inches
Quad Royal = 40 inches x 50 inches
Quad Double Crown = 40 inches x 60 inches
As the size quoted is 5 feet (60 inches) wide it would fit nicely above a Quad Double Crown poster or two Quad Crown posters. So I think the item is a header from a poster board and the art bit just refers to the fact it was used above posters.

Re: LNER Quad Art Poster Header
Correct. When they've come up at auction they've been referred to as Quad Art Poster Headers. I've never seen them in situ in person, as I'm only 41 but a lot of the collectors I know have them. They were above notice boards etc. The Quad Art I thought referred to the big Terrence Cuneo type posters, which as you say are very very large. I don't have any as I don't have room to display them, so I collect carriage prints, and the header will go above them.
The first post referred to the colour used on the enamel sign. I recognise it as LNER blue, but I wondered whether anyone in this forum collected railwayana, and knew of an automotive paint that was a near match for LNER Blue. I'd been told that some of the FORD blues were close. I didn't want to make myself look a chump by turning up at my local Halfords with a 5 ft x 6 inch enamel under my arm if I didn't really have to. I guess better dig out my best anorak!!
Cheers

The easiest way to get a match is to take the sign to your local automotive paint specialist – see Yellow Pages. They will match the colour using their swatches and even adjust it if necessary to get it right. They will supply the paint in tins or nowadays as a ready-to-use aerosol. This is a bit more expensive than going to Halfords, but you should get an exact match!
