W1 tender when rebuilt Tender no 5484

Post by Robpulham »

Hi all,

I plan to build the soon to be released Finney7 W1 kit as the 1937 version when first rebuilt which according to Yeadon had tender number 5484 which I believe was a slightly modified 1928 corridor version. Unfortunately the photo's that I have of 10000 are all at an angle which doesn't allow me to confirm that my belief is correct and I don't want to buy the wrong tender kit.

Could anyone who has the Yeadon Tender volume or who has a photo or other evidence to confirm which tender type I need please assist?

Many thanks in advance.

I very much hope that it is a 1928 corridor tender with the cut-down version of the streamlined fairings (as applied after a certain A4 accident on water troughs) and a long shovelling plate, otherwise my deductions in 2009 as well as my own model are wrong, and I have egg on my face, although it wouldn't be the first time....

Thanks Graeme,

I have the Isinglass Drawing for the original W1 which is drawn with a corridor tender too which supports the theory, because according to Yeadon it kept the same tender (5484) after being rebuilt until 1948

Gentlemen
I have the Isinglass Drawing for the W1 as rebuilt to 3 cylinder in A4 form.

According to the notes, although it kept its original 1928 tender the fairings were modified to the fully streamlined top when it re-entered service on Oct 1937. These are shown in the first elevation on the drawings.

However, they state that the tender top fairings were cut back in Jan 1938 to what was then the standard for A4 tenders and this is shown in the second elevation on the drawings.

Happy New Year

Brilliant,
Thanks Andrew,

It looks like I will need to invest in the drawing for the rebuilt version when I get to building it. I intend mine to represent it in 1937 when it was newly rebuilt.

Thanks again

I think that most (if not all) of the corridor and high sided tenders had fairings added, the most obvious change was the extra part added to the front coal wall which was secured by a support plate inside the coal bunker (not easily seen from the outside as the rivets were CSK)) that matched the arc and secured by a double row of rivets. The fairings were added to this and run back a short distance along the curved side sheets. You can see this in the attached picture of 4472.

And the interesting thing is that this tender still exists.
It’s the one now attached to 60009 having been taken from 60004 in mid 1966.

Thanks,

I had heard that it had survived but wasn't sure which A4 it was attached to.

Another good source of info is from the SNG Locomotive Trust, Mel Haigh wrote several good arrivals regarding A4s and tenders

Yes, please Ron,

I would be grateful for any detail shots that you can get, especially of the inside of the coal space/top of the tender where most photographers don't often see from ground level. Plus any that you can manage of the underneath - brakes/hangers/cross beams pipe runs etc. would be very well received - since this model is for me I would like to make as detailed as I possibly can.

Many thanks in advance for any that you can take.

Brilliant thanks Brian, I have dropped the 4 articles into one document that I can read at my leisure. I had a look around the rest of the archives and they are a mine of information and I suspect a few hours will be lost to perusing in the near future.

Hi Rob

As you know I'm building a 5" gauge Gresley Pacific of which the tender is close to finished, it's built very close to works drawings, if you need any details just shout, I can give you copies of the drawings that I have worked from and photo's of the model if it helps..

Regards

Hi Pete,

Copies of the drawings would be brilliant, and most appreciated, I have a pair of Finney A1/3's in the stash as well as the W1 on the way.
