Has anyone got an idea of the size of the BR cabside numbers of an ex LNER B17?

Having posted this question on several dedicated Railway site ,both full size and miniature, AND sent it to the NRM
There has not been one qualified answer
Rather disappointed that this information is no longer available
Of course you get the 'helpful' replies that BR used 8.9 and 10 inch numbers but that is as much use as asking for the wingspan of Concorde and being given the wingspans of 707/747 and Tridents

I think that you have been rather optimistic to expect this data to be readily available.
on what I have seen in relation to the GNR I would not expect there to be a drawing
dedicated to one particular class of loco, but there certainly are drawings which allow one
to make an educated guess.
I have not looked for those I have, since they are ex GNR related, but since at least one is for
"minor" passenger classes, may well be used to provide the basics.
I will try and find them over the weekend and see what we can arrange.

Can you not find a square on photo and work it our based on the size of the cab windows?
I can't remember what HMRS number I used on the last one I did, but I just took what looked right against a photo and applied them.

Officially 8" high, but it was noted that Darlington used 10"... that difference, for any locomotives that had passed through Darlington, would be obvious.

The Eastern Region generally used the largest of the BR cabside numerals'. Photos show what was 'general' in BR in the steam era. The B17's I've have seen in photos all had the usual large insignia.

Taken a long time to find what I wanted, but Yeadon suggests that 8.5in height for BR cab side numbers.

Well, I have got permission to go and measure No 9 when she is back at Southall, so whatever she has my B17 will also.

Having been tidying up my drawings, I discovered that I had two drawings
which are dated 1948.
They show proposals for two different sizes of the British Railways lettering on the locos of the Eastern Region
10 inches and 9 inches high.
So why they might have used 8.5 I do not know.
