Hertford East

Post by Mr Bunt »

Two views of the buffer stops at Hertford East on 9 August 2010 and 10 April 2011 respectively (well before the present fancy railings had been erected behind them). The fluted cast iron pillars with splayed tops were once the supports for the red lights warning drivers of the presence of the buffers. They are thought to date from 1843 when they were erected at the original Hertford station by the Northern & Eastern Railway Company and were moved to the present station when it opened in 1888.

Hertford East is a Grade II listed building and the cast iron pillars form part of the listing, hence their survival.

Hertford East?. I once applied for a regular signalman's job at the box back in 1974/75 when it came up on the B.R. Eastern Region vacancy list but didn't get it.

The original station was opposite the pub in Railway Street. Much of the site is now occupied by Holden Close, a very appropriately named residential development.
