Post by harvester »

Just found an old note book from a visit to Leeds and Doncaster on Saturday 10th February 1962 . The following is just the ex LNER pacifics noted :-

A4 60006/7/13/14/15/18/26/28/32

A3 60039/40/43/51/62/69/78/87/97/102/106/107

A1 60117/119/120/125/127/129/139/145/148

A2 60533

A highlight must have been seeing Haymarkets Blenheim and Humorist on the same day but I cannot remember along with lots of other things over the past 50/60 years . A not too clear note looks like the return local train to Leeds Central was worked by 60043 Brown Jack probably on a running in turn after a visit to the Plant

Well I was not either.

But mention of '97' or 2751 in 'real money', that was always a Doncaster loco before WWII.

60043 last general repair until 3/2/62, a St Margaret's loco by then. So that all fits.

If anyone is interested this dvd features about one hours worth of amateur colour film footage of steam hauled expresses tearing along the GN main line during the late 1950s & early 1960s and features A1s A2s A3s A4s B1s L1s Britannias 9Fs & WDs. The film footage was filmed at a number of lineside locations on the outskirts of north London and south Hertfordshire but mainly filmed at Brookmans Park/Hawkshead, Potters Bar & Greenwood with and some film footage shot around the Welwyn viaduct and between New Southgate & Cemetery and south of Hatfield between Hatfield & Redhall.

Another memory from those Leeds Doncaster locals was the articulated stock used especially on the mid morning from Leeds . Probably from the pre war West Riding "streamliner". Although not too popular with us schoolboy train spotters at the time I seem to remember at one end of the carriage there was no drop down door window ( artic end ? ) and one could not look out and get approaching engine numbers or a good view passing the " sheds ".
If we had know of their origin at the time we would certainly have been more impressed and gone more out of our way to ride on them .

I have a photo of a Leeds-Doncaster local with tourist stock twin open third in the rake. They had a single door almost central in each body side, with toilets at the outer ends, therefore no droplights at either end of each carriage.
