LNER green A4s. Red lining.

Post by Atlantic 3279 »

Well overdue, last night I started to complete the previously very basic lining on my model of Woodcock, in LNER green - not BR green before anybody gets confused.

Having recently done P2 Lord President with similar Bugatti front, I casually assumed that the red lining towards the front of each valance would be arranged in the same way on the A4. Using a template I made for the P2 job I put a very fine red line curving around the front of the aerofoil shape of the valance and followed that with a line close to the top edge of the valance back towards the cab, then left the new line to dry overnight pending more work this morning. Now I'm not so sure that I'm doing the right thing, so I've stopped work again!

I can see that Hornby lined out both the upper and lower edges of the black valance on their LNER green A4 Osprey, but now that I've looked at such green A4 images as I have once again, rather than just assuming similarity with the P2s, I can't see any hint of red lining around the front or the upper edge of the valance. In one or two images I can see a suggestion of red lining of the lower edge only of the valance, behind the cylinder.

I fully understand that the thorny problem of pan-chromatic and ortho-chromatic film emulsion characteristics muddies the waters of monochrome image representation of "red". The only colour image I've seen (Big Four in Colour) is neither clear enough nor of a clean enough loco to reveal the red lining.

Can anybody help please?

Graeme.
Have no fear I will send you a copy of drawing Q-110-2 which should answer your dilemma.

Graeme,

I have sent you a picture which helps with 4482 in green.

Dave's drawing will provide better evidence for all of them.

Very nice Mick. I also thought it impractical to try to get the upper red line above the rivets / bolt heads.

Thanks to the three of you for the replies and help.

Graeme.
I thought a man of your ingenuity would have removed the rivets and replaced them with individual
Archer resin ones, pre painted red! and get the line in the right place.
I will get my coat..............................
