I have just found out an interesting fact about Manors North Station... part of it still exists. Reading a book about Newcastle Railways, it lists that the cupola/clock tower from Manors North was incorporated into the building of a pub in South Shields. It was built in the 1980s (I can remember it opening) and called "The Marsden Rattler" - named after a local railway - and based on a railway theme. The pub is still standing, though now a branc of the Tavistock chain. I must have passed it a thousand times without realising... However, went back and had another look and it is indeed the cupola. Manors North lives on! Or at least a bit of it.

A pic of the "Rattler" pub can be seen on my contribution the the Sand Dancers website, "The pubs of South Tyneside" and yes I have visited them all.

For those who are not aware a person from South Shields is locally known as a "Sand Dancer"

Hello,

I am new to this site, but I must confess that I also have a slight obsession with Manors station. I am just old enough to remember the north Tyne line before the Metro, Tynemouth being my local station. The replacement of the old stations fostered an enduring interest in station buildings. I want to complement Bullhead on his picture of the booking office at Manors. It is the first photo I've seen of the interior - brilliant. If anyone took any pictures of the subways inside the Melbourne Street entrance I would love to see them.

Best wishes,
Jonathan

Somewhere in my garage in a multitude of storage boxes I have a VHS tape I filmed in the 80s ( along with many others) of the last class 40 on its final run with the Redbank vans passing through the remains of Manors Station. It was filmed from the roof of Manors Multi Story car park.
I have some 20 hours or so VHS archive between 1982 - 1992 which really needs converted to disc, locations include Gateshead mpd, Tyne Yard, Bensham incline, Low Fell, Felling, Pelaw junction, Tyne Dock, Leamside route, Newcastle Central station, Heaton sidings, Westoe Colliery and electric railway, plus various Midland locations.

Easier said than done 52D, I use Macs and I am not aware of any reliable conversion software for Macs. To expensive to have it professionally done besides it needs editing as they are in no particular order. VHS tapes were very expensive in the very early 80s at around £14 for a 30 minute blank so every second was used, it was very new technology then and I cant remember anyone else using a video camera at the locations I used, the drivers and second men used to hang out windows and wave to get on the movie accompanied usually with a long blast on the horn and a mass of clag. The battery packs were huge and only lasted 15 mins or so, even less in cold weather plus the camera itself was enormous by todays standards.
Virtually all I filmed has changed, buildings, sheds, signal boxes demolished, tracks lifted or reconfigured, locomotives and stock well gone, Speed Link vans for instance and Tyne Yard a shadow of its former self, Gateshead depot demolished along with its remaining signal box, the Leamside lifted, White Mare Pool box & freightliner depot gone, the Follonsby colliery disposal gone, Westoe & Monkton exchange sidings lifted, Derwenthaugh exchange and disposal sidings with their private class 09s and Sentinels gone, I guess this video is unique.
I forgot to mention it is all in colour with sound.

Redtoon,
There is a big market here in Japan for changing old VHS tapes onto CD-Rom and DVD (they invented all this stuff). If you are interested a friend here owes me a favour and I can ask if it is possible (digital rules in Japan). Only if you are interested though. Would you like me to check?

Malcolm - cheers - can you ask if there is any software available that can be used with Mac. I have attemped this before with a Windows computer but the software wasnt up to the job. You need a huge amount of free space to carry out the messy operation. Panasonic do have a consul ( Panasonic DIGA DMR-E75VS - DVD recorder/ VCR combo ) but it seems to be unavailable in the U.K at a reasonable price £253 being the only one I could find, I am not sure if a U.S. machine would be compatible over here.

No problem. I'll ask around. Software might be the best bet as VCRs and DVDs in Japan operate on the same system as the USA, ie. NTSC whilst you guys use PAL Secam. However, a chat with some of my friends over here should yield some good info. Also, I'll pay a visit to Akihabara here in Tokyo. If there's nothing there (they do electronic stuff for all over the world) then it doesn't exist.
I'll get back to you.

Malcolm/Redtoon i wait with baited breath.
If this falls through can i make a suggestion that Redtoon forms a one off company with shareholders to assist him in having the material professionally copied for resale. Obviously Redtoon holds the film stock and should get the lions share of any profit with shareholders getting an agreed percantage return. Perhaps an interested narrator could be found.

Great pics of Manors station - does anybody have more? Also, do people have any pics of the old New Bridge Street goods station? Have only seen a couple. I remember years ago my geography teacher showed us some pictures of the empty, overgrown platforms in and around Manors/New Bridge Street. Have never seen them since. Also, any pics of the old Gateshead station, which was next to the High Level Bridge?
