The GNR/LNWR Joint line

Post by Solario »

Does anyone have any information about the GNR/LNWR Joint line? It was mainly located in Leicestershire and ran from Market Harborough northwards to a triangular junction with the GNR Grantham Nottingham line. I seem to think that there were ironstone mines in this area and it may well have been built to tap into that source of traffic. Any information will be welcome.

Many thanks for the reply.

The website is most informative. It covers the subject in great depth and I can thoroughly recommend it.

I lost myself in that site for a few evenings over the winter.. The chap hasn't been able to answer one of my questions though..
In my LNER sectional appendix it mentions a 'watchman' stationed in a hut in Clawson and Long Hose cutting who is provided with telephonic communication with the signalbox. I never have found out why.

Just a guess, but as there is a cuting involved would the area be prone to landslips?

From Google Earth it looks like a rock cutting but i can't be sure as there are no miles and chains given. Instability is a a good reason but there was an incline, not quite at 90 degrees to the track, to an ironstone system on the high ground above the railway. I wondered if this was another reason to provide a watchman to look out for wagons on the loose should a cable fail? Whatever the reason it can't have looked good against the lines reciepts...

LONG CLAWSON

A mechanical gong is fixed on the wall inside the the tunnel 34 yards from the north mouth of the tunnel, on the Up side of the line for signalling to Drivers during shunting operations. The following code must be observed:-

Go ahead.......................1 ring
Set back.........................2 rings

Guards must must notify the Signalman when clear of shunting siding points.

LONG CLAWSON AND HOSE CUTTING. A telephone, communicating with the Signal Box at Long Clawson Station, is fixed in a cupboard in front of the Watchman's hut on the Down side of the line, 120 yards south of Hose tunnel, to be used when necessary by the Engineer's Watchman, or by the Guard or Engineman of trains which have to stop near this point owing to failure of engine or other cause.
