5" gauge model of 4472 Flying Scotsman
Hi guys
Although not technically 'model railways' it is a model and I thought that the subject matter might be of some interest to fellow forum members, I'm sure some of you must delve into larger models...I thought that I might have given some details of the model I'm building here before but for the life of me can't find anything so please forgive me if I started another thread back in the dark ages and have forgotten... that's very possible with my memory these days..lol
anyway, I share a photo of the latest progress on this model, I've been actively building her since 2010 with research going back a good ten years before and i suspect at least another 10 years before completion.
I am building 4472 as she was in the late 30's, A1 and RHD, she is being built as close to the prototype as humanely possible and where physics will allow> This will include a working scale backhead, brakes will be full vacuum controlled and all sanding gear will work, in fact 95% of the gear on the model will work as per prototype or at least that's the plan. The one main deviation from this is my choice of tender (modelers license), she should have a stream lined tender, I'm using the similar high sided type, purely as it matches the cab sides and makes a far prettier locomotive set (IMHO). For those not in the know this means the tender will have curved side sheets at the front and the beading which matches the cab, the streamlined being flat sides and no beading, any other differences are very small.
If I have posted about this model before in it's own thread please direct me to it so that I can update it with the latest stage of build...I don't think that I have so should be ok....
Kind regards
Pete

Very nice! A long job. How do you find the urge to keep going?

Re: 5" gauge model of 4472 Flying Scotsman
Thank's guys...I keep going for a number of reasons.. I love a challenge and back in 98 wanted something to tax my mind a little more having built just about anything going and so bought the plans to Don Young's 'Doncaster' and the journey began, lot's of research first. I am a professional model engineer/model maker by trade so can work in any material and to any scale. Although I have finished a half built A1/1 during this time, this is my first live steam build. An important fact to consider when taking on a long term project is to choose something that you have a passion for, ie, don't take the easy 0-4-0 option..I'm sure you guys with ambitious long term model railway projects know where I'm coming from. For those wanting more, there are two build blogs out there, one on the 'mech' forum (started from the beginning) and over the last few years my Facebook page too. All pictures are on FB, just not all descriptions...the FB page can be found here. https://www.facebook.com/liveSteamFlyin ... page_panel

Re: 5" gauge model of 4472 Flying Scotsman
Thanks, Jon.. I have a lot more to do but I'm getting there, I may make a start on the Cab soon, purely as there are handles and operating lever's and their associated Bowden cables and rods/arms that may require some fettling of the frames or stretchers, best I take a look at this now while I can still get at the various assemblies...I have just printed off around 10 drawings and about 30 images to help with accuracy, should keep me busy for a while, however, as with all things on this model, I can easily be sidetracked and take another direction, after all, it's all got to be built at some stage......

Hi guys
having just rediscovered how I used to post video's, here's 4472 recently having her track trials to check her ability for negotiating tight curves for both the loco and the tender while connected together.

Re: 5" gauge model of 4472 Flying Scotsman
morning guys
I have been working on the cab of late...getting there...next job will be the windows, just awaiting delivery of suitable glass slides to complete the units, frames are partly done, next job is to fabricate the wind deflector frames that fit/pivot between the side windows..
A picture of the cab to date..
cheers

Moving on with the cab, all windows fitted using real glass...rear windows slide open, front will be fixed for practicalities, wind protector shields swivel and arm rest hinges out of the way for the windows to close, all as per prototype...

and outside
overall view of loco coupled to tender with cab fitted..

I’m lost for words, it’s a work of art and uplifting to know there are people like you with skills to do this sort of work still around. The next time I feel challenged by an etched 7mm kit I ll think of this and be spurred on! It must be such an imposing model in 5 inch.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys, we all need such things at times.. Yes delticfan, it is very imposing sitting at 82" in length and weighing in at around 230lb unladen when finished....it's too heavy now for me to lift alone and i'm only getting older... best get a move on...

It really is a stunner Pete. Have seen this around the internet before but it is always good to see it again and see what's been changed.
The tender swap is an intriguing one. I completely agree from the aesthetics point of view. It is, strangely enough, I think, the only tender type fitted to the A3s that Scotsman never had. GNR coal rail tender, beaded corridor tender, streamlined A4 type tender, then back to beaded corridor tender in preservation.
That does not in any way detract from the brilliance of the piece, IMO. It's actually a nice talking point as a what if.
