Sorry to say that I heard this afternoon that Peter Grafton had died.
I should have posted it sooner. Mr Grafton made Edward Thompson's situation more clear than most.
The message was from Peter Rodgers, former editor of the GO.

By coincidence I found a copy of his book "Men of the LNER" in a second hand bookshop in Pickering earlier today. A fascinating read.
