Spot on, 52D! Two coconuts at Xmas - I've got a luvverly bunch of 'em. Thanks for the pic, too.
CVR1865: Yes, it could have helped if I'd said it was a loco. I guess 52D was a bit quick for all of us. I knew he wasn't just a pretty face.

Here's another little teaser!
1. LNER number sum is 14
2. Engine class - an olde stagecoach road
3. Named after the first part of a two part name of a Leicestershire town. The town is
famous for two culinary delights to which suitable accompaniaments would be pickled
onions on the one hand and a glass of port on the other.

Re: What is it 2
Too easy that one i often pass through the town, Melton. I find the pork pies odious but am fond of the cheese actually named after a place in Cambridgeshire but served to travellers on the Great North Road. I think both foods have protected status only being able to be made within a certain distance of the town.

A location: (as it was in steam days)
Come up from below and join the down slow
There's a box between tracks just by here, doncha know?
Then up ahead, water that's softened, not hard
And off to the right, going north, there's a yard
Clue (like you lot need one ) it's on the ECML

Re: What is it 2
Well done 52D, indeed it was far too easy.
Melton is also the name of a dormitory village west of Hull and is right next to another very pretty little village called Welton. In Welton lies the Green Dragon pub - famed for its connection with the arrest of Dick Turpin (Alias John Palmer) and being the place where I ordered and drank my first pint of beer in a pub -I was fourteen years old.
Happy days

Okey dokey, then . . .
A couple of miles south of the first stop out of Kings Cross for some expresses nowadays - though it never used to be.
There, that's probably given it away. So, no oranges at Christmas (or coconuts, 52D, if you're watching )

Sorry about the dye line copy but that's all i can find, look at it full size and it's just about readable.. It even mentions the water softener.

Re: What is it 2
Good job, there, Mr. Pike! Pretty swift answer.
Come up from below and join the down slow - (The down line from the Hertford Loop, which passes under the main lines prior to this point)
There's a box between tracks just by here, doncha know? - (Langley Box - always good for a cuppa with "Dubber" when he was on)
Then up ahead, water that's softened, not hard - (Langley Troughs, of course, water softened courtesy of an ex-Caledonian Railway tender - the local water being very chalky)
And off to the right, going north, there's a yard - (Between the up slow and the old Great North Road there were sidings and a coal merchant's office)
Yes, too bad about the dyeline, I'd love to see a clear diagram of that spot. It's been a few years.
I wonder if anyone can clue us in on which loco that ex-CR tender belonged to. Something about it being a named loco of C5(?) class? Anyway, it must have been a bit of a job hauling it up the embankment which is pretty steep at that point.
