Re: Atlantic's works: Back to the P2s at long last!
I've made a BIG PUSH in the last few days to try to ensure that 2002 is fit to be seen in public at next weekend's St. Neots show. Inevitably, in most of these photos the white component of the HMRS lining shows up far more strongly than it does when viewed with the naked eye, so the nice fine white lines on the transfers look in the pictures like the results of using an emulsion brush, but the extent of progress is apparent. Where I used the bow pen instead, there's still a fair bit of tidying up of unintended blobs and ragged edges to do. Many profanities issued forth as I tried, for speed, to use the pen with some fast-drying matt-white paint. Trying to get the line drawn before the paint ceased to flow from the nib, and trying to adjust the nib and the consistency of the paint to get a fine line that didn't subsequently spread out did nothing for my temperament. Gloss, as per the red lining added to the running plate edges, the frames and the axle boxes, behaves so much more nicely....
The reversing rod still has to go back on, along with the whistle, a couple of lubricators, the nameplates and the bufferbeam furniture. There's a lot more to add in truth, but things such as front steps, cylinder drains, brass highlighting of oilboxes, lining around mudholes, worksplates and the lining out of the back of the tender will have to wait until after the show. The chances of adding lining transfers to the rear of the tender, as it is, look pretty slim as there's insufficient room between the moulded vertical handrails and the lower lamp irons. Something will have to be removed. I might even get back to the cab and tender-front handrails, you never know. If memory and time allow a pair of express train headlamps might get added before the show, to please the sticklers for correct practices.
I'm sure the official LNER painting instructions I've seen always refer to plain black cylinder covers. The Doncaster works photo of 2002 seems to indicate that the paint shop didn't always follow the rules because that double red lining shows up plain as day in the picture!

Lovely work, Graeme!
I'm not convinced by this ding idea on the cylinder casings. To me there seem to be two different approaches: on 2003 the casing is flat until it reaches the cylinders and then bulges out; this is the familiar pattern that we are used to and is usually modelled. A ding would not have created the shadow under the footplate rim - unless the force had been such that the casing was ripped away from it. But on 2006 the casing seems to begin a more gradual bulge right from the front of the loco.

Re: Atlantic's works: Back to the P2s at long last!
Have just been perusing a good selection of photos in The Gresley Society Supplement to The Gresley Observer issued a year or two ago.
The only loco that appears different in streamlining guise is actually 2001 herself. 2001 does not have the sharper angle (horizontal line) at the top of where the cylinders are behind the skirting that appears to be present on the other 5.
The differences seen in photos of the last 5 I would suggest is to do with angle of sun/shadows, degree of grime and hence reduced reflection etc

Re: Atlantic's works: Back to the P2s at long last!
I'm hoping to post a picture of the more complete 2002 later, once I've discovered whether my camera earlier today was simply suffering from low battery charge and/or poor contacts, or whether its electronics, which have been doing one or two odd things lately, have now become fatally corrupted.....
If it's the latter then you'll just have to come along to the East Anglia / St. Neots show this weekend, at Wood Green animal sanctuary on the Papworth Road out of Godmanchester, and see the loco on Grantham. Why not do that anyway? It looks like a rather favourable combination of layouts and traders on the list.

Re: Atlantic's works: Back to the P2s at long last!
Fortunately the camera seems to still be usable with freshly boosted batteries, but it is displaying a worrying tendency to switch from one mode to another without any pressing of buttons to prompt the change, so I don't know how long it will last.
Anyway: Not my usual style of image posting (once again), as Photobucket is yet again mis-behaving for me in an almost impossible fashion tonight, but please note proper express train headlamps (RT Models castings) so I wish to be excused from any disciplinary measures this weekend.

Even though it is out of my period Graeme, I am impressed by the standard of your moulding and finishing.

Re: Atlantic's works: Back to the P2s at long last!
Good morning all
I think that 2002 before the additional smoke deflectors were added was one of the best looking locos ever.
I was intending to travel to the distant north (for me) to see Grantham and 2002, but a friend has come up with a Twickenham ticket for saturday and my local main line station is closed on sunday for engineering work.

Looks like a suitable loco for the Doncaster running in turn over the weekend then!
