John,
Perhaps LNER no.1, BR 60001, at one time Garganey, renamed Sir Ronald Matthews, of Gateshead?
No hero of mine however.
Colombo

Re: What is it 2
Once and future king is the original of the once and future numero uno and it refers to a class of engine that worked on the LNER in the 1940s. (quote by Thomas Mallory) any takers. To make it a little more exiting i want the name of the book that the quote is from as well.

Yes Colombo, well done.
60001 was LNER number 1 in the 1946 renumbering scheme, originally LNER number 4500 pre 1946. Apparently, Yeadon thought this loco was not to be counted in the top ten A4 performers.

Re: What is it 2
52D, I know the Sir Thomas Mallory book was "Le Morte D'Arthur" though "The Once and Future King" was By T. H. White and centred around the Arthurian legends.
The class of loco is hard to get, what is the quote you are refering to?
Is it one of the Southern King Arthur class? as I believe they worked LNER metals during the war? Is it 30453 "King Arthur" himself?

Re: What is it 2
Correct sir i was refering to the King Arthurs as a class. I had a thread ongoing about the Arthurs in the North East/Scotland if you give me five mins i will find it and link it.

Re: What is it 2
My first attempt at this game. Up to now I haven't been sharp enough to figure out most of the conundrums, so I thought I might as well try posing a riddle and let all you cleverclogs do the legwork.
My first is in film, a futuristic classic
My second a letter, though not in Jurassic
My third, just a word in quite common use
My last wends its way as a zephyr, well loose
Over to you, ladies and gents.

You wouldn't happen to be talking about the Deltic prototype DP1 would you?
