I agree about the firebox handrail. I didn't know it was out of position but within 1mm is close enough for me. If starting from scratch I'd aim for the correct position but adjustments at that level stray well into "why not build a kit?" territory for me.

I bought a P2 when they first came out and I agree, those handrails are cunningly moulded. I think the proximity of the separate handrails and the need to alter the cab cut out swayed me towards changing the moulded handrails. This only made it as far as the "to do" list though, so there's time for me to change my mind.

I'm pleased you find time to post occasional updates despite your busy work schedule. This is always an entertaining thread. Thanks.

That looks really good. I always find the joint between Resin & plastic a difficult one to get right but that's worked a treat.

I don't think the moulded handrails are that bad and if mine I would leave, same goes for the less than 1mm difference in height on the firebox handrail.

Being the stickler I am for accuracy and details I would replace the cab and tender handrails - I did on my 2001 and think it looks so much better. I had to repaint the tender rear anyway to redo the lining panel in the correct position.

I changed the handrails on the cab on mine. Used the GBL Mallard tender and changed the handrails there too. I changed the position on the firebox sides as well - if you're going to recreate 2003-2006 then you need to do it really, particularly where you have to change the cab cut out.

I've made similar changes to my P2, but of course caveat it's nowhere near as complete and well modelled as Graeme's. Similar overall concept based on what I observed of Graeme's work last year. I use Bachmann V2 valve gear - nowhere near as fine but it does work a treat.

Firebox sides , are you talking about the Handrails ?

The Valve Gear need to be much lower in the slide bar area, it will look much better if it can be adjusted IMHO.

After replenishing my stock of the correct paints I was able to get a bit further with Earl Marischal on Wednesday. A mixture of about 2 parts Railmatch Darlington Green, 1 part Railmatch Doncaster Green, and just a tiny amount of black was made up. The body was masked up to protect the already-painted black areas, and to create staged masking of the rear part of the boiler, with a break at each boiler band. I then sprayed over the previously "undercoated" green area with the new paint mixture at full strength. I then added a further 1 part, or thereabouts, of clear satin varnish to the mixture, removed the masking as far as the next boiler band, and sprayed another coat. I then weakend the paint a bit more with satin varnish and applied a further coat extending to the next boiler band. One final round of the process took me as far as the cab front. You'll see in the picture that although still visible, the factory lining on the rearmost boiler bands has a green tint now. The transition from the new "best match" paint on the boiler to the original factory shade on the cab and tender is nicely blended. Lining will be re-applied in due course. I decided, even though time was at a premium, to lower the handrail on the firebox side, but those on the cab and tender will have to stay as they are for the moment.

Of late, I have become somewhat nerd-like in my appreciation of the streamlined front end of the P2s. Worth trying to show the slightly wider cylinders than the A4s. I'm not sure whether it is an illusion, but I also wonder if the front end streamlining also came down lower, or at a steeper angle, than with the A4s.

The bulges over the cylinders are certainly characteristic and I incorporated those in my own yet-to-be-multiplied master model.

Regarding the curvature downwards at the front, prior to using the Hornby-derived A4 nose shape I superimposed a true side-elevation view of the Hornby nose on John Edgson's P2 drawing at matching scales. The curves matched up perfectly, not just "near enough". The appearance is however greatly influenced by the shallower rake of the (upper) flat part of the nose casing that surrounds the base of the longer faired-in chimney on the P2s.

28/02/17 - For clarity, it was the current generation Chinese made Hornby A4 nose shape, as also exploited by Great British Locomotive magazine.

Certainly would'nt disagree with that. It probably depends which Hornby A4 to use as a staring point. The current one is as good as it gets, previous iterations much less so. The front end of my P2 was from a Phil Kerr Foxhunter casting, but to be honest, all that's left is the goodwill.

It's noticeable that the bulge in the cylinder area is different on both locos. 2003 looks more concave, 2006 more convex.

That to me looks like damage to 2003 potentially - it looks like it has suffered a bit of a ding in that area.

That or it's a illusion caused by the light reflecting off slight differences in the casing.

Graeme, just want to add my appreciation for your craftsmanship. I've not been as active as I'd like recently (modelling or on this forum) but I always find it worth checking in every so often. I'm interested in the castings as and when they become available.
What do you get when you cut an avocado into 6.022 x10^23 pieces?
