Hi,
Tony, yes the Fox LNER lettering is a bit of a pain, but worth it once you've got everything in place! I've been repainting cheap Dapol Gresley's too and can now post a picture of the first finished side!

Hi Atso
The coach looks good mine are a bit darker than that. Cant quite see! have you done any lining? if so what did you use?
Mine are not quite finished because I am scratching the head re the lining. I may just leave them plain.

Hi Tony,
Nope, the coach isn't lined (yet??) due to the same problems you're having. I might have to invest in a lining pen but that isn't going to happen at the moment. Also, I find that the varnish doesn't settle on the beading very well which does create a yellowish lining effect at normal viewing distances.

Hi Atso
I think/I hope I have solved the problem. I sent a query off to Fox and they came back with a suggestion that perhaps I could use gold lining. They do a sheet FG1391 which you can check on their website. I have ordered a sheet to see what I can do with it. The lining is all right angle corners in a box pattern as far as I can tell from the pictures that I have. Gold dulled up with satin varnish may solve it. will let you know when the transfers arrive.

Well - if it is of any use, it looks great to me! If anything I painted came out like that I would be happy!Atso wrote:Hi,

I am hoping to get to the Colchester Model Railway show on Sunday, and I understand that the N-Gauge Society stand will be there, and I want to get one of the full brake Gresley kits there. When it is finished and painted, I will post here what it looks like!

Hi Guys
A couple of piccies of the `teaked` maroons. I feel that they have turned out a bit too yellow and that is probably because I used a cream undercoat. The next ones I have got coming I will use a reddier undercoat.
I have ordered a Buffet and some Fox Pullman transfers F2200/2 with the wording on and I have also ordered the gold lining FG1391. and i have got some more all thirds coming. At 9GBPs they are hard to resist.

Tony, they look great! What paints did you use? Also I can't help think that I've seen that layout before, do you have it posted elsewhere on the web?
Also at £9 a pop has anyone else had the urge to cut one up and build something else out of the parts?

Re: Scratchbuilding an N gauge Gresley coach
Steve, I managed to pick up a lining pen for £4.00 (metal not plastic) from a shop in Guisborough. I am quite happy to pick one up and send it to you (assuming that they still have them) next time I am up. Probably next weekend or the weekend after. Just let me know.Atso wrote: I might have to invest in a lining pen but that isn't going to happen at the moment.

Hi Atso
If you have ever been to Webshots and seen my albums, one called "Westfield, now renamed `Millchester`" the layout is on there along with most of my LNER locos. I belong to Wellington British Railway Modellers (WBRM) and `Westfield was an exhibition layout that I helped to build and when the club retired it it came to live with me in my garage. I have done a fair bit more to it since it has had a permanent home.
The paints I use are `Precision` coach teak and Pullman cream as undercoat. I used the undercoat basically to cover the maroon and give me a nice base to put the teak on.
Did you notice the close coupling? I am using the short buck eye couplngs and have bought some from Dapol so they are short at both ends, look a lot more realistic.

Hi Rob,
Yes I would be very interested in a lining pen please - have you used yours? How do you rate it?
If you do manage to get hold of one, please PM me to discuss payment/shipment - thanks
Tony, I thought that looked like Millchester. I love the look of the layout! I didn't know that Dapol was selling the short buckeye couplings... I'll have to get some....

Re: Scratchbuilding an N gauge Gresley coach
Steve, for the money the lining pen is excellent. I have lined the full BG on my WB thread with it. Like all things it is getting the technique right that takes the effort. Not a great deal to lose for £4.
I will pick one up for you and PM you once I have it.

Re: Scratchbuilding an N gauge Gresley coach
Atso: My NGS full brake arrived yesterday. Probably a project for the new year, but I have time to gather the remaining bits. It looks like it will be best to paint the sides before assembling the body (as you have done above). I'll probably the instructions and leave the black bits as-is unpainted.
What kind of paints are the Cherry paints, so I can try and find local equivalents?
(dark teak, thinned light teak top coat, plus polyurethane teak varnish; right?)
For decals I was going to use the wording from Fox. Not sure about the lining - that is going to be very fiddly! They might work in N scale and a light teak without the lining?

Hello Richard
I`m with you re lining. That is about the decision that I had made with the lining. Mine don`t look bad as they are. I have got some 0.5mm gold lining coming from Fox and I will leave the final decision till I have tried a bit and if it is tooooo difficult they can stay unlined. The only good thing I can see is that there are no curved corners to do as on tenders, it is all right angles and straight lines. Will let you all know how I get on.
If it is successful I will post piccies.
