And now a bit of something different. "Snaps" from last Saturday morning at Shildon. Originally billed as an "LNER Event" and then as a "Shed Bash", neither being fully convincing descriptions if you ask :

Complete with the Boss sneaking in on the action..

One for modellers of ultra detail to get their teeth into.

Compare with puny single layer valve gear from thin sheet.

Only a moderate amount of silly fencing spoiling this view.

Guess the loco.......

It certainly wasn't this one.

I was interested to see that compared to the outer ones, which are constrained by lips on the horns, the middle axleboxes on the V2's tender can slide laterally between plain horn faces - note the strip on top of the box rubbed bright by movement in the hornway. I was also struck by the sharpness and straightness of the red lining, then I noticed that the NRM has cheated by using lining tape - you can see the overlapping layers at the corners. Professional model painters don't resort to such dodges even at 1/76th full size!

Off we go again.

Elegance.

For £5 a head you could be crammed like a sardine into one of three brake vans, topped and tailed by Flying Scotsman and the J72, for no more than a quick shuffle up and down the yard. I resisted! The way I read the NRM website I got the impression that £5 got you a short trip in the yard on Scotsman's footplate, 10.30am to 1pm, and that after that time £3 got you similar on the J72. I still wouldn't have paid, given Scotsman's current finish, but £5 to be stuffed in a van with other hot sweaty mugs seems to me somewhat extortionate.....

Even though I picked my moment to get a spectator-free view of the miserable dark green coat and elephant's ears, the organisers had made a good job of placing anti-twit fencing where it also ruined any attempt at a decent photograph. Did it really need to be 2 metres high to stop fools from wandering into the path of the loco? Of course, if you were mug enough to pay £100 you could attend a photographers / enthusiasts session - but I don't know if that would include removal of the fences....

Just the job!

I do like a nice vintage electric. I even went into the museum shop, utterly determined to buy nothing, yet emerged with a book I don't have room for - all about the history of the Shildon-Newport route.

Technically on loan from Dan Pinnock, via tony Wright, I believe. Glass defeats auto-focus as ever....

Lovely photos; shame as you say about the anti-idiot fencing. Reminds me of when I visited Didcot, about 5 years ago now, when Tornado was visiting. Someone decided it would be a good idea to walk right across the back of it, as it was backing up. Common sense often seems to go out the window as soon as a steam engine hoves into view.

I'm afraid not. The bullhorn regulator handle might give a clue.

Yes I wasn't sure what the regulator looked like on an N2. So perhaps it could be a giant model of the recent Hornby release! Or in other words the prototype for Hornby's latest LNER release and maybe its lurking behind Green Arrow in that photo?
