Just received a link from a friend in the UK with a whole schwack of photos taken in 1960 by a group of German enthusiasts who 'did' Britain's railways - and very good photos they are.
There's a lot of text, all in German of course, so if you understand the language no doubt you'll enjoy the site even more.

Edited to add that I am intrigued to note that in June 1960 they photographed a condensing pannier still bearing a 'shirtbutton' GWR monogram, twelve years after that railway ceased to exist.
