Very interesting

Personally, I'm not a fan of pick-ups that run on the tip of the flange - too much of a sharp point contact - but I do like the coiled springy effect.

Are they the little springs from floppy discs, if so at last a use for a bag of them I put away when I got rid of all my floppies, thinking you never know when they will come in handy .

I've not had great success with flange-tip wipers either. I think the very limited potential contact area leads to detection of every irregularity in the fine surface finish, causing too much tendency to vibrate as they run along the irregularities, interrupting contact and producing an annoying scraping sound if you are unlucky too.

I'm not sure how Roy obtains or produces the springs. I've steered his web navigation in this direction so there's always a chance that he'll sign up to contribute to the site then he may be able to tell us.

Cheap and dirty solution to such wiper troubles, solder a tiny piece of gold on to act as the contact. Hasn't failed me yet. I use a small 18ct chain link from what was once the feeble safety chain on a great-grandmother's brooch. (Replaced it with a more robust chain so that my sister can wear the brooch.)

I see that changes to the way that imageshack are now hosting old images, uploaded when they still offered free hosting, have wrecked most of the image links on this thread between pages 17 and 213, i.e. most of it! Only payers now get automatic functioning of image links. I hope Photobucket don't do the same thing in due course, otherwise most of the images after page 213 will vanish too.[/size][/b]

27/12/2018 I've left these edited remnants of the original post here. Although no longer relevant now that I am using neither Imageshack nor Photobucket, which DID also withdraw free hosting, it is a reminder to all never to rely on "free" offers that come without guarantees....

Well..... If you right click 'quote this post' on one of your posts, then it will show the URL of the image. If you copy and paste this in to your browser, it will show the image. A bit long winded but they haven't gone forever

Aha! So it works by that means for other users of the site does it? That's certainly good news. Does that method refresh the link so that the image displays on the site too? When I did the same via the "edit post" option, it tended to restore the link, but then I was connecting to my own imageshack files!

According to the emails I had from Imageshack, they have stopped remote linking for free accounts, so don't expect the images to reappear in your posts. By doing as suggested above, you're viewing them on the Imageshack site, which they do still allow.

I don't know whether there's a way to allow downloading of the images, so people can help themselves to the ones they want? I abandoned Imageshack when they started to impose limits on the number of images they'd host for free and haven't logged into my account for a long time.

Back to some model making news:

Determined to avoid having nothing new to show at the fourth exhibition in succession this Autumn, I've done a little more on the J2 conversion this week. Your may remember me starting it a while ago, before the need to catch up on masses of other jobs and / or lie around coughing, sniffling and being completely unable to think or motivate myself robbed me of most of my time. The scrap running plate that I first used as a trial piece has now been replaced by a good one, adapted in the same way to fit the stripped K3 chassis, with additional modifications to deepen the splashers, shorten the front overhang, deepen the box over the piston tail rods and alter the frame top profiles. There's still more to do to tidy the running plate, so it isn't a two minute job to convert the J6 item to J2 guise. I've also extended the cab side sheets and arranged for the cab front to actually meet the rear of the boiler! I've tacked the body together with spots of superglue and temporarily "gooed" a chimney a dome in place to allow me to check in more detail just how things look and measure up. I think the boiler at present sits a shade high, showing too much daylight between boiler bottom and splasher tops, but I'm getting somewhere near the right result. I'll try to get a picture up on here today if time allows, otherwise it will have to wait until next week after the Spalding show - unless of course anybody wants to see the model so far at Spalding. I'll certainly have it with me, behind Leeds Central.

Good evening, I understand you make parts to convert RTR locos either to correct errors or to make different versions etc. Are these to order or available generally. The PDK kit for the A2/1 has a boiler that looks too small compared with the smokebox. This is odd as the V2 kit boiler looks better. Any thoughts on this.
