Possible help with info on A3
Hi guys.
I hoping some of you will be able to help me. I've acquired a Hachette kit of the Flying Scotsman.
Know after all the has finished here's the questions.
I'm looking for information on building this as a BR version in blue, express livery from 1948 to 1952.
1, which loco's where repainted in blue like the (Pretty Polly 60061) and (Grand Parade 60090)
2, what tender did they have, and where can I find info to mod the one I have.
3, what is the blue colour called.
4, where can I get details on the engine designs to chance on the Hachette kit
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Here's my Scotsman I built awhile ago

Re: Possible help with info on A1/3
Sorry no-one else has replied to your post.
This forum is a marvelous repository for information of the type you want, but it is worthwhile using the search facilities.
The whole subject of the A1/A3 locomotives is quite complex, and it is best to get access to one of the standard reference works.
RCTS Locomotives of the LNER Vol 2A
Yeadon (sorry can't remember volume number 'cos it's one I don't have)
Several publications by Peter Townend and Peter Coster.
Are you specifically interested in 'Flying Scotsman'?
According to RCTS it was in BR Blue from 12/49 to 03/52, at which time it pulled a 'Streamline non-corridor' tender.
There is much discussion here and elsewhere on tender types and variations.
The model in your picture appears not have the 94A boiler which (subject to correction 'cos I make no pretence to great knowledge in this field) 'Flying Scotsman' carried in her 'blue period'.
Again, I suggest you use the search facilities.
(I do have Pacific locomotives, but most of my interest is in the smaller and often dirtier engines that made the real money!)

Hi drmditch
First thank you for your reply I was thinking that I has asked a question that no one wanted to reply to
I've been looking around at the excellent information on the forum and the web, but as I'm not a great steam buff and don't understand most of the jargon it all gets very confusing for me.
What I was looking at trying to do if it existed is the following. I'm not looking at building this as another Flying Scotsman but as a different A3 but in blue.
I would like to use the following.
A double chimney.
A banjo dome.
Remove the pipe that runs down the right of the boiler to the left of the boiler. If that correct for a A3 of 1949 in BR blue.
GNR tender.
Would like it in BR blue with red lining, I've seen this on some Hornby models but again not sure if it's correct.
Was also looking at the BR logo with the lion on the wheel

Re: Possible help with info on A1/3
You have a choice of one.
60097. The only A3 with a double chimney in BR Blue livery.

Thanks John.
Might have rethink that then. Not much of a choose
Would I have more of a choose by changing the chimney but keeping the Blue

Re: Possible help with info on A1/3
Hi
If you keep the single chimney you can pick from a large selection of the A1/3's except 60070 Gladiateur and 60076 Galopin which were never painted blue and as you now know 60097 Humorist which was used as an experimental loco for most of her career and having a double chimney since 7/37. None of the A1's were converted to left hand drive until the 50's which is after they had been converted to A3's with the banjo dome so if you are modelling 49 you are restricted to a loco that was built as an A3 from new. Also note that although most were painted blue a lot of these were done so after 49. and also note that no A1/3 had a corridor tender for your chosen era so you'd need to change/modify the tender too.
regards
Pete

Re: Possible help with info on A1/3
As all the rest had single chimneys in blue, if that livery was carried, much more choice. All would have been A3s by then as well.
But beware, boiler/dome types varied, as did tenders. Along with left and right hand drive versions, which you noted in your original post.
drmditch is right, try and seek out a copy of Locomotives of the LNER Part 2A by the RCTS, dealing with all the Pacific locos. If you like modelling 4-6-2s it will repay the cost many times over, and they can be picked up at reasonable second-hand prices.

Re: Possible help with info on A3
So I've got hold of the book, and have had a quick look inside.
I've see that the pullout sheet in the back shows that all the loco's where BR blue at some point.

Re: Possible help with info on A3
all but two as stated above....also bear in mind that a lot of them didn't get painted blue until after your chosen date of 1949 and none of them had corridor tenders...

Hi Pete.
Yes of course No 60070 Gladiateur and 60076 Galopin.
I may open up the date time, I'm just interested in doing a A3 in blue really.

Re: Possible help with info on A3
Ok so I've whittled the list down a bit, here's some possible ones.
Solario, Victor Wild, Royal Lancer, Hermitt
St Simon, Melton, Persimmon, Blinky Bonny
Blair Athol, Merry Hampton, Felstead, Grand Parade
Coronach, Colorado, Flamingo, Huriorist
Spearmint, Booklaw, Colombo, Hyperion
Cameronian, Salmon Trout, Singapore, Brown Jack
Harvester, Shotover
From what I can work out these where all
blue between '49 & '53
Converted or built as LHD within these dates.
And had a GN tender, but the tender might change to a standard if I can't find GN tender drawings or photos.

Re: Possible help with info on A3
I'm now down to four name as possibles.
Grand Parade 60090,
(Blue '50-'52) (banjo fitted '44-'53) (LND '28) (GNR '36). So build year 1950
Book Law 60088,
(Blue '51-'53) (banjo fitted '47-'54) (LHD '30) (GNR '43). So build year 1951
Royal Lancer 60107,
(Blue '49-'52) (banjo fitted '46) (LHD '52) (GNR '43). So build year 1952
Singapore 60042,
(Blue '49-'52) (banjo fitted '34) (LHD '34) (GNR '43). So build year 1949
So out of them I'm thinking of Book Law or Singapore, but swaying more to Singapore.
Any advise or info welcome please.
