NER Duplicate list 1781

Post by 52D »

I am trying to find the location and a little more on this loco can anyone help. The building in the rear should be a clue it is marked Jeffreyes Cocoa Essence. I thought it might have been the Co-op factory at Pelaw but others don't think so. So over to you guys.

The NER 959 Class was the subject of a couple of articles in the North Eastern Express, the journal of the North Eastern Railway Association, and although no definitive location for the photograph of No. 1781 could be given it was thought that it was most likely to have been taken at Infirmary Yard, Newcastle or somewhere very close.

Tom thanks for the info which I cross referenced using Baxters. According to them the original was built by Manning & Wardle as a 900 class 0-4-0ST W/No.491/ NER No.960 transferred to the duplicate list as No.1781 in April 1889 and sold out of service December 1891. I wonder who bought her? and where was Infirmary yard in Newcastle?

Infirmary yard was to the west of Newcastle Central. This was the east end of the Forth goods yard.

This photo is in the Infirmary Yard Newcastle on Tyne which was a small goods siding attached to the Forth Goods Station. It was very near the Central Station. The building with the advert on is the Cattle Market which was bordered by Railway st, Ord st and Scotswood rd. This area is now occupied by a multi storey car park (Railway st)
Hope this is of some use.
