Northern Division Ballast Hoppers

Post by Caledonian »

The LNER version of theTrout ballast hopper as released by Hornby is marked up as belonging to the Southern Division with an instruction to return to Appleby Slag Heap, ie: Appleby Frodingham near Scunthorpe.

So far so good, but where were the Northern Division hoppers to be returned to for refilling?

The new edition shows the Appleby one and two from Scotland (branded for return to Portobello).

On a tangent I recall engineers wagons being labelled RETURN TO ETHERLEY TIP was the tip used to dispose old Ballast or general railway rubbish.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
