German style smoke deflectors on A3 pacifics.

Post by woolwinder55 »

I can just remember seeing a few of these locomotives at Kings Cross in their last few years of service; however, despite my best efforts, I have never been able to obtain a definitive list of the 55 locos so fitted. From photos I am aware of some of these. Also, I would be interested to know which engines were fitted with small deflector plates. ( I believe 60055 was one such). Can anybody help me on this?
Having read various comments about appearance ect, I think they enhanced the appearance of the class although obviously the success of the deflectors would be the most important aspect. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Gareth Pattison.

I can recommend Hugh Longworth's excellent book "British Railway Steam Locomotives 1948 - 1968" as a useful source of detailed information.
It lists 57 of the class as fitted with German type deflectors, but does not refer to the small deflectors.

It seems that there is some disparity between Hugh Longworth & the RCTS publication Locomotives of the LNER Vol 2A which records 55 being fitted with the Witte trough deflectors. It would be interesting to know who is right.

Re the small deflectors, according to Yeadon's Register, there were four locos fitted with them, 60048/055/061/112, & three of those subsequently had replacement Witte deflectors. 60055 being the odd one out.

There is a table at the back of the RCTS volume listing which locos received the Witte deflectors together with the date of fitting.

Hi Solario and 61639. Thank you very much for your responses to my query. I have seen the book by Hugh Longworth but not yet purchased it, sounds like a very good reference work. I do have the same authors book on steam loco shed allocations which is an amazing piece of work. I shall certainly look up the books mentioned and hopefully satisfy my curiosity. Thanx again guys.
I was born in 1955 so maybe I should make my user name Woolwinder as per the loco number!
