Hornby LNER J15

Buffer stocks were generally black, but it depended to an extent on the Works at which the last repaint was applied - another variant of the old Darlington lined green cylinders.

65447 is correct. Stratford painted the buffer stocks black. Darlington was the odd-one-out, many of the black locomotives painted at the works had buffer stocks painted the same colour as the buffer beam.

Colour-Rail photo NE19 shows a J15 with black buffer stocks. In this photo of 7571 the initial digit '7' also looks slightly larger than the rest. A copy of this photo is reproduced in LNER Locomotives in colour, the album of shots mostly by H M Lane.

Got to agree with SAC, "one of Hornbys' best".

There is definitely something about this particular model.
It looks just right and runs beautifully.

Have to agree - lovely smooth runners, both of them, also the K1 that came with them. Only problem - when I built my trusty Nucast one back in '87 I numbered it 65445. Couldn't find a transfer sheet with large offwhite figures so managed to up it to 65446 with some Floquil and a 000 brush and eyestrain. Miss my daughter who paints pictures of pets almost hair by hair!

Anyhow well done Hornby - now for the D16/3's.

Renumbered my J15 to 65446 using HMRS numbers which match perfectly - I thought I could simply change the crest on the tender of 65445 to back date her to the time at Colchester. Wrong, she comes correctly with the slotted tender frame for late crest, whereas at Colchester she had a D tender frame!
