Last GNR Alantic

Post by Boris »

Just looking through an old diary with much faded pencil entries I find that on Feb' 14th 1949 I fired an Atlantic assisting the night mail from Sheffield as far as Dinting where we came off, turned on the triangle and had our snap before returning light to Darnall.

The loco number is so faded as to be unreadable

Got home that morning and met the postman on his way to our house and he handed me my calling up letter to report to Padgate the following week for my National service.

Would it be one of the last Atlantic running at that time.

Boris,

There would not have been many and all had gone by the end of 1950. Do you recall which class it was? An ex-GN C1 or an ex-GCR C4?

Four of the surviving C1s were based in Sheffield at this time: Nos. 2817, 2854, E2877 and 62885.

All the surviving C4s were based in Lincolnshire.

Of course the last Atlantic running for BR was a Brighton type, the last of which was withdrawn in 1958.

A case of get fell in lad and 'get some in' eh Boris?.

Did the Atlantic you fired have a Gresley cab?.

I didn't like the look of those Gresley cabs fitted to the GN Ivatt Atlantics they didn't enhance there looks in my opinion. :?
