My paternal grandfather was an engine driver based as far as I know at Kipps Shed near Coatbridge in the 1920/30s I am led to believe he worked for North British Railways on engine numbers 446 and 447. Would these Locos have been absorbed into LNER at grouping and if so any ideas as to their numbers following this.
NBR locos added 9000 to get their first LNER number so they became 9446 & 9447, the two locos in question are Class C16 4-4-2 tank locos which eventually became 7490 & 7491 in 1946 and 67490 & 67491 in 1948 both being withdrawn in 1960 from Dundee or one of its sub sheds.

Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Just add a 9 in front of the number and you get a pair of C16 Atlantic tanks 9446 & 9447 renumbered to 7490 &7491 in 1946 they lasted into BR days as 67490 & 67491 both being withdrawn from Dundee shed in 1959.

Only just seen this.
North British 0-6-0s 446 and 447 were converted to saddle tanks in the 1890s. Both were put on the duplicate list in 1916 and withdrawn in 1919 - before grouping. However, three fellow-members of this class survived to become LNER class J84
The numbers 446 and 447 were then allocated to some 4-4-2T locos, (about 1916) which survived to become LNER class C16 numbers 9446 and 9447 respectively. Became 7490 and 7491 in 1946 and eventually BR Nos 67490 and 67491. Both withdrawn in 1960
JW I wish there was a handy reference work but you have to consider year, company, duplicate lists, service stock and all number of factors to do with numbering. My own knowledge is mainly for ex NER locos and to do that successfully you need at least 3 books to assist. The first is British Locomotive catalogue 1825 - 1923 volume 5A by Baxter & Baxter. The second is Hooles North Eastern Railway Locomotive stock as at 31 12 1920 which gives NER designs built after the grouping as well. The last which is a good all round guide is Locomotives at the Grouping 2 by Casserley and Johnston.
Shotts446447 post above gave roughly the year and the numbers. 20s/30s and 446/447 as the numbers, LNER added 9000 to ex NBR locos in 1923 so they become 9446 and 9447, a quick look through Casserley and Johnston gives the LNER class and the 1946 numbers and by adding 60000 you get the British Railways Number.
What a palaver.
JW my opus on Locomotives of the York Newcastle and Berwick Railway has discovered more than one number which was used on three totally different locos so I am getting used to looking out for other details and as for named locos don't get me started as a company as small as the YN&BR had more than one loco with the same name.
