Page 93 of Yeadons volume 10 shows a J38 with a train of bulk Alumina vans and covered hoppers in 1965.
I realise that answers to my query rely on the respondents having a copy of the said book and may therefore be limited but will ask regardless.
1. I do not recognise the location in Burtisland can any one pin it down?
2. The collection of wagons seems varied to say the least, I can identify 4 types of covered hopper and 2 van types. Do we have among our ranks and expert who could provide more information on types?
I have assumed I should not scan and post the Photo in the book.

I don't have the book but types I know of on the Burntisland workings are:
1. LNER 'van' conversions from wooden NER-style coal hoppers
2. LNER purpose built steel covered hoppers
3. BR standard covered hoppers (COVHOP)
4. BR pressure discharge hoppers (PRESFLO)
5. BR pressure discharge hoppers (PRESTWIN) - these only used in the '70s AFAIK and then only on a flow to Essex.

Are you sure the date is correct? As far as I am aware the J39's had all been taken out of service in the cull of '62 other than 64747 doing the stationary boiler bit down at Woodford Halse.

Pennine MC: So it sounds like the Burntisland Alumina travelled on different routes. Or it did in later BR days.

I'm thinking of the LNER wooden conversions. These are an interesting prototype, and Slaters produce them in 7mm. However, I thought they only ran in Scotland (Burntisland to Fort William iirc). Running south of the Border into NER territory would make them a more plausible model for me...

Richard - sorry for the confusion, and for the delay in responding (I must set my default access to the whole forum, not just the modelling one). No, what I'm meaning is that the Prestwins were provided for a totally separate flow - the traditional use for alumina coming in at Burntisland was to the Lochaber (Fort William) plant, as you say, and I'm not aware that the wooden vans ever worked anywhere else.richard wrote:Pennine MC: So it sounds like the Burntisland Alumina travelled on different routes.
