While we are all considering 52D's question about Kings, Castles, etc on the LNER, and it is burning hot here in Japan, here is another picture quiz (or rather three pictures).
Can anyone identify the locations in these three pictures? I assure you they are all in LNER territory (albeit pre-grouping days), but each show a loco from a foreign company. The companies are obvious, but where are they? Certainly not on their own metals.

The first picture is, without doubt, Hitchin. The push pull train is standing in the down platform.

Correct. Well done.
PHOTO 3 is Hitchin station on the GNR showing a Midland Railway push-pull service for Bedford on the down platform.
Now, any takers for the others?

Yes, definitely Hitchin for the top photo, but what threw me a bit on it is that sloping structure in the background behind the coach at the bunker end of the loco. It almost looks like a covered footbridge, but there was always a tunnel under the lines to reach the up platform. I have no recollection of a bridge ever being there.

The bottom photo of the LNWR Precedent? has a look of York about it.
I have just found out that it is not a Precedent but a Whitworth. The Whitworths were similar to the Precedents but had 6' 0" wheels against the 6' 7 1/2" of the Precedent.

Hitchin most certainly had a curved footbridge in the early days. This is the only picture i've seen suggesting it was covered.

Yes, you are right on all counts.
Photo 1 shows LNWR 2-4-0 764 "Shap" arriving at York with a special.
And, I was just about to say Hitchin did in fact have a covered footbridge. Can't find out though when it was removed.

Well, you live and learn. That's the first time I've ever seen that bridge at Hitchin. My first foray there was around 1953 and it certainly wasn't there then. Does anyone know when it was removed and when the tunnel joining the platforms was constructed?
