A4's stored at Kittybrewster shed, Aberdeen

Post by kingfisher24 »

I am looking for pictures of A4 Pacifics stored at Aberdeen Kittybrewster Shed (61A) during the early 1960’s, between 1963 and 1965 I think.
Research suggests 60016 and 60019 may have been stored there for a period before being taken back into stock and allocated to Aberdeen's other shed Ferryhill (61B) until withdrawal. However, in all my reading I have never come across any photos of these particular locos stored there. Can anyone help please?

Same location
Kittybrewster any photos of Snowploughs there please.
I believe at least one of the Rosedale ploughs ended up at Kittybrewster and lasted until mid 60s.

In the first half of the 60's, Scottish Region had an unusually large number of locos. in store. An enterprising gentleman provided a list of them, which he updated frequently; to my circle of spotters, Scotland was a distant and exciting place we had no chance to visit in those days, but we got the list and dreamt.
Most of the locos were time-expired, and were possibly stored until either their book cost, or the cost of their last works visit, had been amortised, and would then be cut up. However, I recall that some locos on the list were surprisingly modern and not conforming to this principle; and although I don't recall the A4s on the list, there were certainly Black 5's (including a postwar one) on the infamous Bo'ness dump around '62, in the company of ex N.B. and Caley veterans and I believe that the Blackies ran again.
Perhaps someone still has one of these lists.
On the LM, locos out of service were usually greased on the motion and had the chimney covered with sacking and most locos. that were subsequently condemned were so treated; but some DID make a return to service. Apart from the ScR lists mentioned above, none of this seems to have been recorded.
Incidentally, I described Bo'ness as infamous because local enterprise removed much of the non-ferrous fittings quite quickly!

Storing of capital stock was usually done when they had shopping "life" left in them and they were held for possible further use. Often (as in the case of the 1963 A4 transfers into ScR) a loco with good shopping life left in it would be stored while another would run out its mileage and/or time to shops.

The Scottish Region seemed to hang on to locos far longer than other regions, who would just bin them when they became surplus. Perhaps they had an eye on seasonal traffic or more Glasgow Suburban EMU type debacles but there seems to be several cases in the late 1950's/early 1960's when a loco that was stored hung on "in capital stock" longer than another of the class that had been worked till full time/mileage and then withdrawn.

This was because you "stopped the clock" when a loco was put into store and that pushed back the SP (Shop Proposal) date accordingly. Also it did not accrue any more mileage towards the shopping "target" mileage which, when attained, the relevant Shopping Bureau would nearly always accept it for shops.

Works overhauls were not amortised, they were charged to revenue. Only new build, major renewals and some modifications were capitalised. Hence some of the decisions towards the end of steam to cut back on overhauls as this was always a major revenue expense, especially in materials. Book life of a loco is a bit misleading as you can write it off anytime, crediting the capital account variance with any scrap value, a reasonably profitable activity for BR in the 1960's.
