Dear All,
I'm hoping someone will be able to assist in my search for a suitable four digit number for the Gresley 4-8-2 that I'm constructing over on the model railway section of this Forum!
My question is simple, what numbers were vacant in May 1939 that were not reused until the Thompson re numbering scheme?
I have theorised that if these had been built then a batch of five would have been constructed, similar to the V2's. This would have allowed them to be allocated to the major points along the ECML for evaluation purposes, before anymore were ordered.
Looking forward to any useful responses

Re: Vacant Locomotive Numbers
The ones just above the last A4s (4904 onwards) weren't used, were they?
The 24xx numbers released by the scrapping of the Raven pacifics (5 of those as well) would also have been free.

Re: Vacant Locomotive Numbers
The LNER way of doing it would be to allocate any new build the lowest free number available after scrapping the previous engine that carried it. I believe manna mentioned a while ago about two digit K3 numbers.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Re: Vacant Locomotive Numbers
Good morning all
Some of the vacant numbers would have been taken by the proposed 2-6-4-4's and the proposed three cylinder 4-6-0's.

Re: Vacant Locomotive Numbers
Well I've pondered the responses and done some research.
I have a choice of two numbers, 4925, which puts in a series after Atlantics streamlined version or 2895, just along from Cock o' the North's planned number before changing to 2001.
Can anyone confirm that these numbers were vacant?
