As far as I know, the LCLT are still fundraising for the restoration of this loco and a stores van......

As mentioned previously, there is what appears to be a 'new' laminated A4 notice on 65033 - it states that fundraising is ongoing and gives a couple of e mail addresses, and also says that when running again it will be based at Kirby Stephen East

model exibition at Shildon this weekend 15/16 March , 65033 is parked out side , have a picky but could'nt get it on the page ?

Although the LNER changed to vacuum brakes throughout the NER area in the 1930s many engines retained the Westinghouse brakes for the engine. Many so fitted lasted for the remaining life of the engine but there was a progressive change to steam brakes with vacuum for the train brakes.

In the case of 5033 the Westinghouse brake was removed in 1948.

According to my reading of Yeadon (for my model of 5033... here...)..) this loco retained it's Westinghouse brake (and it's LNER livery and number) until at least 28/9/48. Presumably losing it after going into shops on 4/11/48.

(The picture on Yeadon 47A page 59 has 65118 in the background which gives the first date)

As for NER pre-1904 livery, well much as I like green engines, this one is very much in BR condition as regards a lot of details on loco and tender. Although I suppose since it does now have a short smokebox and piston valves it might be said to be close to post 1908 NER and thus black condition. This would be prior to 1914 when it was superheated.

There was a nice gentleman at Shildon who let me crawl down beside it to get details of the brake gear at the rear of the frames.

I sincerely hope so, 52D where we always had the odd one.

Yes it makes you wonder why they kept failing. Once makes sense - make mistakes and then put in a better application.

Also the amount seems low - enough to find out what is needed perhaps and do the non-loco exhibits?

I remember riding behind it on a school trip in what must have been 1976 or the early part of 1977. They still have the NER coach there somewhere, don't they?

The first couple of times were when Lottery funds were being raided for some sports day thingy in 2012, weren't they? :mrgreen:

I think the full amount being sought from the Lottery is some £800,000, to be matched by £200,000 raised themselves; a lot of cash, but this is definitely one deserving to be a success.

Yep - it was on the Tanfield for a while but returned a couple of years ago, needs some work done to it but ran in service briefly - it's fantastic
