Resin casting in certainly on my mind. I've yet to imagine a feasible and economic way to simplify the challenge of scale valve gear for those who want the correct type.Mercator II wrote:Now that is a good looking conversion Graeme, which now begs the question, will you be able to make it into a sell-able part as per the W1 cab extension, i.e a plug in piece so us lesser mortals can follow in your footsteps

Here's a little nugget of information for anybody struggling to find supplies of brass pins suitable for valve gear assembly.
http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/aca ... nails.html
All of my sets of valve gear built up with pins and solder in the last five years have used the Amati 10 x 0.7mm pins, so I know they do the job, but until recently I had no idea of how to get more once my packet of 100 picked up at a show in 2009 eventually ran out. Now I know. The 0.5mm pins may be handy for the finer jobs too.

I'm following this and the other P2 threads with interest. I do so want a Bugatti-nosed, double Kylchap, P2 in green. Do you suppose any of them got into County Durham in that condition?[/quote]
I do not see why you could not justify one. There is the well known picture of Lord President at Newark running in on a local service to Grantham.
I'm watching Atlantics conversion with interest and hope certain parts become available.
As for the ET versus NG debate I'll comment on there

Another round of filling and smoothing completed on the P2 Bugatti front, more features added to it too. A couple of improvements made to the new plating on Earl Marischal's front and small corner patches inserted into the smokebox front:

Absolutely stellar work Graeme, very well done. Chimneys will be going in the post tomorrow for your perusal.
The finished front end is absolutely breathtaking.

Thanks Graeme for the reference for the brass pins - my packet of 100 bought more than 25 years ago is looking very depleted and I have been looking for some time for a replacement source. I even had to turn some of those down in the chuck of my cordless screwdriver when I was building a L&YR steam rail motor for a friend so now I know where to get very fine pins as well.

Round at BBs house last night and he showed me some Somers ore hoppers that he had fabricated from plasticard with a view to casting later, very tasty indeed. I hope he takes the hint to post pics.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

I too will be interested to see those.
A frenzy of activity last evening and today has brought the P2 conversions to a condition that whilst far-from-finished, will at least serve to demonstrate all of the main features for the time being.
I blended in the mixed-parentage sections of running plate on Earl Marischal, slightly deepened the vertical plating above the true buffer beam, and I've applied some primer to reveal remaining defects as well as to indicate the only chunk of new bodywork that I would consider it essential to cast in resin were I to go ahead with replication. I suppose a plug-in resin boiler patch to allow simple cutting out and replacement of the ACFI bulge with a fairly flush area might also be preferable to the chore of trimming down the solid plastic moulding.
Lord President's as-built (i.e. fully streamlined) tender has been created by uniting a GBL Mallard tender top with plastic add-ons and the underfame from the Hornby P2 tender. The cabside cut-outs have been reduced and (leaving the moulded handrails alone for the moment) the turn-in of the sidesheets has been eliminated simply by bonding on a narrow strip of plastic aft of the upright handrail. I also scraped off the beading from the rear edge of the cab around the cut-out.
On the cab roof I've trimmed back to over-long detachable rear plate and made up the streamlined fairing behind the ventilators. As built, according to the RCTs text all but Wolf of Badenoch initially lacked the extra vents over the crew seats. That saves me another fitting job! Cylinders on aplastic fabricated stretcher as per my method for Earl Marischal have been fitted, with tedious filing down of their outer faces to allow them to fit within the Bugatti front. Incomplete Walschaerts valve gear is the best I can do for the moment on this loco. Time and etched parts have run out, so I had to recycle a part set of cut-down V2 valve gear off one of my early Thompson conversions for the time being. It allows the loco to look more complete anyway, and it works without snags.

Fantastic stuff Graeme! Just superb.
Will you be the first to have all 6?

Errr.. Graham, don't hurt me for saying this, specially after you saying about filing down the cylinders.... but from the photo's I've seen of the Bugatti nosed P2s I got the impression that the streamlined casing round the cylinders was shaped to flat faced bulge, perhaps due to a larger cylinder diameter (21") than on the pacifics (18.5")?

Don't beat yourself up for pointing out that feature. I may create that particular subtlety of shape at a later stage. In like manner, I've already decide that Earl Marischal's cylinders need another wrapper to beef them up from V2 girth.
Now here's another point for us all to contemplate. I'm fairly sure it is an illusion caused by fall of light, type of film emulsion, viewing angle, and grime, but on looking at your lower picture of Mons Meg (one that I've seen elsewhere too) wouldn't it be all to easy to interpret the extension of the usually red valance lining as actually being white above and ahead of the cylinders, with the cylinder fairings below that white line being a Darlingtonesque green?

G'day Gents
The last picture of Mons Meg, I would say was taken in the height of summer, on a very hot day, looking at the handrail and along the top of the boiler, you can see a mirage effect, must have been well into the 30's C.

Sorry to rain on your parade Manna, the effect is merely the picture becoming distorted when reproduced too large for the original image quality.manna wrote:
