a simple wagon metalkit in 4mm

Post by jubbely »

Can any point me at a online supplier of a simple white metal/brass kit of a wagon that I can use as practice before moving on to carriages and locomotives please? My shop only seems to stock plastic kits and the ones on ebay are obviously out of production kits and a little too pricy to make mistakes on!

Preferably something suitable for a ex-GER/LNER prototype, but anything will do to start with!

Thanks
JJ

Try Andrew Hartshorne of MSE/Wizard Models for something from the 51L range,he is very helpful.David geen also does whitemetal wagons and ABS have a good few LNER prototypes in their range, now including some ex D&S.A whitemetal wagon is a good starting point for sure.

Thanks for that, I've ordered myself a 10t open goods wagon from the 51L range and its on it's way! (+ wheels and coupling)

Right, next query. Soldering irons. I have read that Weller 40W or an Antex 25W iron might be suitable, but that was on a O gauge site. Any recommendation for 4mm scale?

Sorry for the questions! Just making my way in gently :)

JJ,
Good choice! It really is a great starting point.A simple answer would be to call Brian Lewis at C&L and explain your requirements while pointing out you don't want to spend a fortune initially. At the same time,a decent soldering set up will save a lot of frustration and possible disillusionment. For whitemetal you will need a temprature controller as well as an iron,IIRC Antex do one,I have the old SRB model-whitemetal melts at a low temp so you need 70deg solder and a low setting on the iron, proper flux etc.Brian does a useful guide to soldering but the best advice ever is in Ian Rice's "Whitemetal Loco's,a kitbuilders guide"(Wild Swan)-beg,borrow or steal, you won't regret it!Well, you might,if you opt for the latter course.......
The book does not deal with chassis building, just the superstructure, and explains everything from the casting process to preparation and soldering, assuming no previous experience. If I were only allowed one modelling book, this would be it....

JJ, for white metal I use a Silverline 8 - 40 solder station on the second setting. You can get them off ebay for 14.99 +P&P and Carrs yellow label flux. I was until recently a beginner like yourself.

thanks for the advice guys!

I have managed to source a copy of the Iain Rice book, which has apparently been posted to me today, I'll have a good look at that before I commit to anything. The Carrs site is now on my favourites list and I see that the irons that RobP suggested are on ebay, so no probs there. I'll post up once I get going!
