Re: N gauge P2 ideas - Now P1 progress
The P1 is looking good Steve. Whose restaurant triplet set etchings are they?
Cheers.
Cheers.

Thanks Rob
The sides are from the recently re-issued Caven'dish N gauge kits which are printed directly onto clear plastic sheet.

Very impressive- better buy shares in farish for that 80 wagon mineral train...
I have looked once again for the late 90's British Railway Modelling that had plans and photos of the P1, but I honestly cant find it - hope you dont think me full of false promise! If you want to search for it yourself, I am pretty sure it is September 1998. If my mind isnt playing tricks on me, I can swear the article showed a P1 roaring down to London with the number on the tender, not cab. It was a colour photo, dated 1939. I may be wrong though- does anyone know?
I think the 2mm association makes a nice nickel casting of a westinghouse pump= and various LNER fittings such as buffers that may be of use. Members only alas!
good luck- Are you going to scratchbuild the cosmetic Cartazzi truck, cos once again I think the 2mm assoc makes brass-cast tender axleboxes/springs that could be useful even if not totally accurate.

37..39..., What's a couple of years between friends!? The number-on-tender scheme seems interesting for a late 30's LNE loco, I thought this practice stopped in 1928, or was that just the green engines; that said, I can't say I have seen many pics of later 1930's goods locos showing tender no's.

Thanks Steve. Who is marketing them now? (sorry to keep asking questions but I have a small N Gauge layout that I would like some for.Atso wrote:Thanks Rob

Will, thanks for looking for me - I'm using the outline diagram in the book 'Gresley's Locomotives' along with as many pictures as I can find. I'm going to use a UM tender drive and am looking to make a tender using Farish spares. I wasn't aware that any locos had their numbers on the tender by the 1930's, Mick/Will many thanks for that piece of information! My loco will be a late 1930's version after they lost the booster unit so I'm guessing that they both got the numbers moved to the cab during the overhaul...
I am going to scratch build the rear truck - I beleive that BH Enterprises stock the axle box castings which I will also need for the tender. Will, why do I need to by shares in Farish, I thought that you were going to build me a complete train to go with this loco!
Rob, the sides are being marketed by Gloucester Model Warehouse - they haven't got complete kits yet and expect to wait a little while for delievery of the sides but well worth it just for saving me the task of painting 'teak' - Sides are being sold for around £4.50 ish a set or £13.50 for the triplet set.
Anyway, I've managed to graft Farish V2 cylinders and valve gear to the Fleischmann chassis - and get it to work! Also, I've been playing with a spare (broken) V2 chassis and came up with a new combination - what do you guys think?

Think the caption is wrong in Yeadon's. It says picture taken in 1937 shortly after removal of booster, yet the booster is still there.

Nice work! Did you simply cut that V2 chassis right through between the wheels and then shorten the coupling rod? I have always fancied a 4-4-0 as they were really common Ex GC machines for light passenger work in North Lincs by the end og the pre-group period.
I see you have the D49 tender sorted out, but these engines ran with Robinson tenders for a while (re-allocated on breakup of some B1s I think), so a union Mills Robinson tender drive wouldnt actually be inaccurate for it!!
keep up the good work,
Will

Re: N gauge P2 ideas - Now P1 progress
Cheers Steve, I will have a look on their website.
Re: N gauge P2 ideas - Now P1 progress
Will, the chassis is unaltered at the moment, the rear wheelbase is too short for a D49 but I've just got some coupling rods for a Farish 4P which are just right. My initial thought is to cut away the front of the chassis where the pony truck is mounted, remove enough metal under the cylinder mounting for the bogie and cut a new slot for the rear drivers using the coupling rods as a template. Or alternatively I might just build a new chassis and use the wheels and valve gear from the V2.
My version will be the one that was based at Kings X for a time (can't remember which one, I'll look it up later) with the early group standard tender in the picture. Although I'm modelling the late thirties I'm sure I can invent a reason why it wasn't transferred north after 1929!
To be honest further progress past the playing stage might be awhile, I've got several unfinished projects on the go, including my streamlined B17 (how long ago did I start that) the P1 and the P2 - not to mention all the locos I've still got to get transfers for! However, does anyone know if anyone produces D49 nameplates in N gauge?
I also got a GNR tender top today which will be my basis for the unique P1 tender - time to play again!

Re: N gauge P2 ideas - Now P1 progress
I've made a start on the P1 tender - work to date involved shortening the A3 tender be 2mm and cuting out the molded coal and rear tank top as well as filing the top to shape. Still a long way to go but heres some initial pics (as always taken on my phone so sorry for the poor quality!).

Re: N gauge P2 ideas - Now P1 progress
You'd need to shorten the eccentric and arrange the return crank to drive off the 2nd axle but the rest looks OK - keep us posted!
If I ain't here, I'm in Bilston, scoffing decent chips at last!!!!
Re: N gauge P2 ideas - Now P1 progress
Hi all,
I've been progressing with the tender, still quite a bit to do but its starting to look a little like the prototype. Blink Bonny, thanks for the positive comments, hopfully in one of the pictures you can see the Farish valve gear which has replace the origial gear there.

Hopefully some better pictures of the tender and valve gear.
