On the GE empty coaching stock is known as "cars". i.e. cars to thornton fields.

I presume Thornton fields carriage sidings on the Down side of the GE main line between Bow Junction and Stratford are long gone?. I went in there several times on class 31s working trains of ECS to & from Liverpool Street when i was doing a bit of Secondman duties when i was on the loco at Stratford MPD during 1979.

Not as interesting as the old Bounds Green & Hornsey carriage sidings on the GN were though.

Been past a few times Micky and I can't see a trace of 'Thornton's Field' (some GE staff's opinion of what the correct name should've been as their story was something like that the land was originally bought for GE staff recreational facilities by an American gent named Thornton).
There's still something of 'Bow Midland' freight sidings though [connecting with the Down Temple Mills (used to be the Down Cambridge and or Carr. lines A/B), just London-side of where the leads into TF used to be].

Yes that doesn't surprise me Stevie that Thornton Fields carriage sidings are no more back in 1979 they were full of B.R.Mk1 & Mk2 coaching stock although i can't recall if they were 'wired up' with OHL but chances are they were?.

Thornton Fields carriage sidings were situated on the Down side of the running lines between Bow Junction & Stratford station and were all most but not quite at right angles to the main line on some waste area of ground, there was a fairly tight curve at the entrance/exit to the sidings i recall.

If you was working a train of ECS from the sidings up to Liverpool Street a mile or two away you would exit the sidings and come out on to the Up carriage line (i believe it was called?) as far as Bow Junction s/box were you would be crossed onto either the Up Main or Up Electric lines for the short'ish run up to Liverpool Street passed Bethnal Green s/box and the down the bank into Liverpool Street station.

I seem to remember on unofficial visits to signalboxes east of Edinburgh in the 60s there was always a weekly paper list kept by the register headed 'Summary of Emcars' so this was the Scottish Region name for ECS.

Some of the roads were wired in "the fields" - I've seen Norwich mk2s with class 86 attached standing there.
