Photo of a loaded NER C1 Fish Wagon?

Post by richard »

This is a bit of a long shot, but does anyone have a good picture of loaded NER C1 5 ton open fish wagon?

I'm just starting out on building the Furness 7mm kit. This is the open wagon with slats in the side. Nice and smelly fish :-)

I have a good works photo and drawings, so I can suitablely paint and letter it. However, I was thinking of loading it up. The best evidence points to them using tarpaulins, but photo confirmation would be great. Presumably they avoided covering the slats up (otherwise it would defeat their purpose). Also how high were they loaded?

I have the relevant volumes of Tatlows and the NER Record. John Teasdale at the NERA has also sent me No. 171 of the NE Express which includes an article on the C1 by Richard H Lacey. This has some useful text description (e.g. the grooves in the floor), and it does have a photo which purports to show sheeted C1s in a consist circa 1920. However, the photo it a typical 3/4 view and the C1s are near the rear. We only really have the photo caption to confirm they are C1s and that they are sheeted! To be fair, the rest of the consist looks to be fish/perishable vans, so it would make sense if they were C1s.

Thanks for the reply Marc.
I've just looked in the Oakwood Press book on the North Sunderland and I can't see any C1 pictures. Not many pictures of wagons at all, really. Lots of the locos and a few of the coaches.

In the photos between pg22 and 23 there is a photo of Bamburgh as Seahouses with a mixed train of 2 open fish, 1 covered fish and then another C1 fish. All the C1's are sheeted sheeted.

Ah yess I see it - must have been looking too quickly.
My C1 is waiting to be painted (before the end of the year - I have a few wagons to paint), and then I can look at sheeting.

I guess your 0-6-0 crane tank is now available? Do you have a website?
