Earl/Tom I was threatened with a lynching if I repainted my green D20 to black, although I do like them in black.

I think LNER black with single red lining is very attractive livery. Hornby's new D16 looks lovely from the photos I"ve seen....sadly North of York I can't have one.

I haven't built my D20 yet, but it will have to be lined black.
A few years ago, I bought a D23 in green with a GS tender. I've replaced the tender with a Dave Alexander tender painted black, but I haven't yet had the heart to paint the loco black.
I don't like K3's in green, but do like 4-4-0's in green.
I've never seen a model of a D22, but it looks a simple conversion from a J21. I don't think they lasted until 1938, and they would be black as well.

Maybe on excursions? I'm sure I've read somewhere about 'foreign' loco crews taking on board a pilot over NE metals, so perhaps some LNER engines would also have worked through from other regions?

Tut tut Danby Wiske, I'm trying to save money....i have proof of B17s working north to Newcastle, not read anything about D16s....if someone has evidence...I'll have one!

The D16's had a small tender, so I don't think they went too far.
They could have worked the joint line to Doncaster.

D16s went as far as York from their very early days (GER) and the LNER sent some to Manchester as well.

I've never seen any pictures of one past York, though.

The only B17s that I saw in Newcastle were on running in turhs from Darlington. You were very lucky to be there when one did arrive, via the High Level bridge, into a bay platform (probably 6 or 7) at the East end of Central. I caused great excitement when this did happen which wasn't very often.

Of course they could only have arrived at Darlington by working north from York and beyond.

ages ago I posted a pic of DERBY COUNTY masquerading as SUNDERLAND taking a footex to wembely in 1937 as the real SUNDERLAND was in the shops. The pic was taken at Newcastle Central. Will find and repost.

I have two B17 photos of them, Up North. 2835 Milton, at Newcastle with a York train, 19/06/1937 (2385 is a Doncaster allocation) and 2846 'Gilwell Park' at Low Fell on a parcels, 1/09/1939 (2846 was a March allocation).

Both locos were overhauled at Gorton during this period, so running in turns can be ruled out.

Indeed. I remember that photo well - the stuff of which legends are made. Definitely worth a re-viewing.
