N gauge P2 ideas - Now P1, D49 & mystry loco progress

Hi guys,I seem to remember someone kicking around the idea of a P2 in N gauge a while back. I've been thinking about how to do this - namely the chassis. I've come across a site that lists the service sheets that come with Fleischmann locos and think I might have found a suitable chassis. Only problem now is to find a suitable tender drive. Link is below, anyone else think that with some work this might pass for a P2 chassis?http://www.vdweerdt.nl/manuals/fleischm ... 139_b.htmlAlso I've noticed that Fleischmann driving wheels have see through spokes. Has anyone attempted to swap Farish/Dapol wheels for Fleischmann and if so how difficult was it?

That chassis looks just the job and I notice that the tender for the BR39 is motorised. The only problem being that the tender has two separate articulated bogies. I wonder whether it is possible to put LNER white metal sides over the bogies such as those that come with a Peppercorn kit. Busy looking now to find out the diameter of the driving wheels.

I checked out the Hattons website and found a nice picture of the loco lined up with a ruler. The wheelbase looks just about right and I'm guessing that the driving wheels are there or there abouts.

Obviously I'm not going to spend over £100 on a loco I'm going to dismantle and disregard half the bits of so trying to track down Fleischmann's spares department.

Regarding the tender, I don't think its actually articulated just the question about the wheelbase. If its close enough, I think I might try the Farish side frames and a scratch build body.

Spoken with the UK Fleischmann rep today - its a Bank Holiday in Germany today but I'm expecting to get a price from him tomorrow. However, I have been told to expect c. £25-30 for the chassis unit (just the loco not the tender).

Hi John,

Got a problem as Fleischmann is being sold and as a result there are not going to be any spares made available for the forseeable future. Does anyone know of a cheap class 39 going anywhere?

Rails of Sheffield have a complete loco on their ebay site, it's only got five days to run and the price is low at the moment, bet it won't stay low for long!!

Yes, i've got my eye on this one as well as a couple on german ebay. I think you're right though, it'll go for silly money!

I had the same idea meself a few years back and so I sent an e-mail off to them. I had a prompt, polite reply that basically told me that the prices for the complete chassis and tender drive unit would be nearly that of a beand new loco.

My only advice is to see what you can pick up second-hand.

Yup, the price is silly but I have managed to purchase a good condition second hand example for less than £70. The only problems now are:

1.) How to tackle the valve gear
2.) The wheels are no the correct diameter for a P2 but are almost spot on for a P1 - do I model a P2 and accept the undersized wheels or go with a P1 (considering I've already got a half finished P1 body sitting on my workbench begging for a chassis and use the existing tender drive for something else...)

Suggestions welcome!

Only you can decide- and given how ebay prices respond to even the slightest flutter in 'real world' model availability, it could be your only chance- so no pressure!

Should you ever decide to exhibit I know for a fact a P2 would be a crowd pleaser. But there is something quite exciting about a P1 with a properly huge rake of wagons- 60+ minimum...

oh, I know you were thinking of getting some Bill Bedford stuff done- he's given some useful info on how to approach building his 2mm stuff in my GCR workbench thread. (after cocking it up and needing bailing out I may add...) May be of some use.

Actually, both are superb crowd pleasers. On Sunday, I and a few friends (Yes, I do have some - stop sniggering at the back there!!!) visited the Gainsborough Model Railway Club's open day and they have a P1 and a P2. Both brought many gasps and questions.

Now here's a question for y'all - anyone do a 4mm kit for a P1?

Hi,Its been a while, but I've finally got some more work done with my 2-8-2. I decided to go with a P1, partly because I'd already started work converting the minitrix A3 body but mostly because I won a spare Fleischman 2-8-2 chassis on Ebay for £10!

Work done on the chassis so far includes the removal of the lighting system to be able to mount V2 cylinders, putting the coupling rods on back to front (good thing the wheel spacing is even!) to allow the Farish valve gear to be fitting to the second driving wheel.
