We are currently rebuilding and repainting one of our fleet of Lowmac wagons.
It is 217315 an EO built by the LNER in 1939 capacity of 21t. (May be more)
Our query is to with livery.
All underframe and below decking is in Black.
Side frame is Freight Brown.
What colour should the top of the frames be? Brown or Black?
In the photo attached the frame top is currently in grey primer / undercoat.

Freight Brown is another variation on the same colour.
Red Oxide, Indian Red or Freight Brown are very close together in the spectrum.
The Lowmac is a fitted vehicle.
However our query is, Should the frame top flange be Black or Brown?

The whole of the top flange was covered by decking, either timber in the centre or steel above the headstocks, so you could paint it any colour you like as it won't be visible.

They didn't. The wagon works used a paint with bauxite as the pigment, which could vary in tone considerably. Modern paint manufacturers put labels on their paint tins which may or may not correspond to what was used by the LNER. The colour in the photo looks far too red to me, but then I haven't seen the wagon in person.

Not in this case Bill.
The timber decking rests on a framework inside the frames so the top flange is exposed to view.

This photo was taken earlier in the year before work started.
Existing paintwork is well weathered.
I have increased the size a bit but unsure of the pixel limit on this site.
The side flanges are approx 1ft above the decking. Or more easily midway between the two rows of rivets along the side.
