Re: 2750 (Tom's) Workbench-North Eastern Modelling 1938
Evening all
After quite a bit of research, I've found that more of the late 1930's A4s appear to have red backed nameplates. It was a known fact that the special A4s had red plates (Original 4, Commonwealth, West Ridding and Director examples) but the bird name A4s have long been thought to have standard black. I've found several colour examples of red backed bird name A4s and one of these was 4466 'Herring Gull'. You have already seen Herring Gull in this thread, but I've made some alterations.
I believe I read somewhere that the Commonwealth A4s had red plates that matched the wheels.....and this niggled with the Fox plates I original added, the red was far too light (suiting the BR period). My friend Simon Martin decided to have a go at repainting his nameplates and the results have been pleasing. The colour now seems to look right, and like the prototype I've used the same paint as I did for the wheels.
Although preservation cannot be relied on for authenticity it's interesting that 4489 'Dominion of Canada's plates are the same colour as the wheels, and as you can see in the photo with my Father below, BITTERN appears to have been done the same way. This was taken at the Great Goodbye.
Anyhow, enough of my ramberlings. Here is 4466 with repainted nameplates.
Another modification. Although the lamp irons on Hornby A4s look very nice, they are not very practical if you wish to have correct lamps used when running. I therefore took the decision to replace the outer two lamp irons (most A4s in this period are going to be on Express Headcodes) with staples. Once painted these look quite in keeping, plus allow lamps to be fitted properly.
I am probably going to do this on all my A4s. Not for the display cabinet....but for replicating the work they did in the late 1930s!

4489 will be up next. I also intend to crack on with weathering one of the Silver A4s.
I do think the term weathering is misleading.....as it seems to suggest dirty. Weathering as far as I'm concerned is aiming to replicate your model to reflect their real world counterparts.

Thanks Simon!S.A.C. Martin wrote:Looks terrific Tom, I really like that.
A couple of test photos of 4489 outside. Yesterday I was working on buffing up the Satin finish. I did this on the tender by using household furniture polish, I've also added some subtle weathering on the tender and loco. Whistle and Bell look the part, thanks Mike!
Wheels painted Phoenix Precision LNER Crimson. Nameplates to be painted shortly and hopefully the loco will be finished for tomorrows running.

Re: 2750 (Tom's) Workbench-North Eastern Modelling 1938
Evening all!
4489 now is finished. It should be pointed out she is depicted in 1938 condition, rather than 2014 condition. The main difference is that for some reason the NRM didn't burnish the handrails on 4489 which as a Coronation engine she should have (two colour photos back this up). Ironically 4468 Mallard is preserved with burnished handrails which she never had prewar.
I've depicted her as she would have looked storming through Thirsk (most likely on the Flying Scotsman). She would have done 200 plus miles since leaving King's Cross, which is enough time for a touch of dirt to build up. She has just over half a tender full, which would be about right (Thirsk is about halfway between the two capitals).
Special thanks to Mike Johnson for making the bell and whistle.

He certainly is Atso. The detail on the whistle let along the bell is stunning!Atso wrote:Nice work there Tom! Mike is very good a making small items like that, isn't he?

These two ex Great Northern C12s were done as a commission for Tony Wright, and are being returned to him tomorrow. I was given three excellent colour photos to work from, which showed a lot of brake dust on the under frame which I have tried to replicate in particular.

Tom,
Those C12's really look the business, I'm sure Mr Wright will be very pleased with them!
The more I look at your work in OO the more I find that I'm dissatisfied with my rather clean 1930's brood. Would you be up for the challenge of doing some N gauge one at some point or providing a couple of lessons???

Taken with pedantic literality (yes, it's a word ), it means the effect of the weather. Which could be taken as extending to other elements of the environment that are carried in the air, like smoke and steam, diesel oil and exhaust, or brake dust. But your point is sound of course - too many folk think it's all about grime and decay, or just making something look a mess.2750 wrote: I do think the term weathering is misleading.....as it seems to suggest dirty. An inspiration!
When I get my railway re-built I'll have to consider the colour of the plates my late 30's 'special' trains. If 'Herring Gull' was red, then perhaps the more generic 'Sea Gull' should be as well!
Perhaps, for clearer species separation 4902 should have been 'Black Headed Gull' !!!!!

A DMR build by Tony Wright of exLNER K1. Loco will be returned to Mr Wright on Sunday. I used a photo from LNER 2-6-0s for reference (page 48). Rather pleased with results.
