LNER coach for a B1 in 5" gauge.
Dear All
Please could anyone who is more knowledgeable than I have a look at the this "LNER" teak.
It is to go behind a 5" LNER B1 Mayflower.
The coach design does not look exactly LNER even though it is done as a teak. I think it matches an LMS coach design.
The differences were very minor though to my untrained eye.
Will it be suitable? Also should I go with a grey or a white roof?
They are steel stricture with a fibreglass body
Hydraulically braked bogies and foot rest / brake pedal.
Looks good to me but what do I know? I missed it all being born in 1970!
Regards
David

Non corridor stock had black ends from 1928. Both these coaches had corridor connections.hq1hitchin wrote:Sorry Mick - if the ends should be black in LNER livery then we got it wrong with restoring the GN directors saloon and that means they got it wrong with the NER dynamometer car when it was last through works in 1928...

Hello Folks,
Thanks for the imput so far.
This is a new coach from Aristocraft.
Visit http://www.aristocraft.me.uk/default.htm
Bar making one myself this was bar far the best I could find to suit.
My workshop skills are not too hot so I have opted to go for one of these.
Looking very closely at the Martin Evans based B1 there are quite a few deviations from the photographs of real B1 locos also.
I just want to get something that looks to most as if it is correct, as opposed to having just an ordinary riding truck behind the loco.
Just as long as the first time they run together I do not get some bright spark yelling "Ere boy! What you doing with an old LMS brake third behind that B!"
Thanks again for all the advice.
David

Re Martin Evans B1.
The main difference I noticed was the steam pipes from the cylinders being far to far out and ugly
On the B1 they were very short.

Re: LNER coach for a B1 in 5" gauge.
Hi David,
Just come on the site - haven't been here a while - and seen this.
Yes, as I thought, one of Rob Halls Aristocraft coaches. I know Rob and he does a great job with his coaches and wagons in both 5" and 7 1/4". Looking at the picture - I have some photos of these coaches supplied by the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Works (later Metro Cammell) at Birmingham who used to make a lot for the LNER in the 20s and 30s. A few years ago, I was researching the carriages to produce some for 5" gauge, but ill health at the time stopped the production at early stages.
The ends of those coaches, supplied by Metro was in fact not black, but like yours, in teak.
I may be wrong, but I suspect that you are right about them being an LMS design and that Rob may have used the same moulds that he uses for the LMS coaches - the roof in the photo you have is definitely not the same profile as the ones I have in front of me. Also, I can't find any designs in all my LNER caoch books to match the design you have in the photo.
It does look very much the same as the maroon LMS coaches that I have seen around, produced by Rob. Like I said, he does a superb construction job - they are made in one piece glassfibre construction for the body, not from side, end and roof panels bonded together, so they are extremely strong.
Regarding the B1 - in the original Martin Evans design, as I recall, it had slightly smaller driving wheels than the correct scale size, so they looked "not quite right" with the running plate appearing slightly high. I was looking at one (that I am hoping to purchase), built to that design, only a few months ago .
Regards,
GeoffB

Re: LNER coach for a B1 in 5" gauge.
Hello Geoff
Thanks for the reply.
I have a brake third on order now.
After a lot of research I quickly came to the same conclusion.
Nothing in the market that even comes close to the quality of this product.
Dealers with nothing to sell to me have even stated that Rob's coaches are brilliant.
You can't buy that sort of advertising.
Yes there were quite a few teaks in this style and later large windowed types. Some with black ends and some without.
I will be pretty happy when it arrives as it will look 1000x better than the riding truck I have on loan from a good friend.
Not that there is anything wrong with the truck except its for 7 1/4".
I just have to wait for my slot in production and be patient.
A rake of 6 would be nice but I think the boss may have something to say about that.
Having inspected a few B1 photos now I can see a large number of differences between the Martin Evans design and the real thing.
Once you are behind her though, pulling passengers and having great fun then who cares.
Never short of steam, quite the reverse.
I get an awful lot of reward from the attention she gets at public days on our local track.
My children love to drive her on club nights too.
Thank you for your advice.
Kind regards
David

Re: LNER coach for a B1 in 5" gauge.
Hi David,
When I was last talking to Rob, a couple of months ago, he said that he has now produced well over 200 coaches!
Talking of riding trucks, have a look at mine - "GeoffB's flatrol" on Page 10 of the model railways forum - built because of my hip problems, so that I could kneel instead of sitting astride - now well fixed, so I can ride on normal riding cars at last.
Just hope that I can get the B1 I'm looking at - just down to when the dear old guy who built her will let her go. Big wrench for him, but the promise is that he can come and drive it around my garden line whenever he wants, which he has not done so for about 3 or 4 years now.
Have fun,
Regards,
GeoffB.
