LNER Locomotives in BR Days

Post by Darwin4975 »

Members of the forum may be interested in seeing photos of LNER locomotives taken in BR days. Stills and action they record scenes local to my home in the North East as well as further afield. Starting with some pictures taken in 1961.

One of the original four A4s, Silver King brings an early morning freight up Stockton Bank in April.

Just a few days later on a visit to Carlisle, Brown Jack was at Canal shed having brought in the Waverley from Edinburgh.

Carlisle again but in September, with Coronach on display along with Glen Lyon. The Glen had worked in from Hawick and was the last member of the class in regular use -withdrawn a few weeks later.

Back to Teesside and Wild Swan heads from Stockton for Kings Cross with a Sunday coastal route working in October.

Thanks for posting these photo's; the final chapter in operational activity for LNER loco's. It's a pity that colour film was so expensive during this era.

A trip to London in August 1961 included a visit to Liverpool St Station.

I didn't see the N7 station pilot but that was made up for by the sight of the other pilot, No 68619 in really dazzling condition. The livery was dark blue and both the BR and GER crests were present.

I couldn't stop taking pictures!

Nice indeed Darwin. A fair mixture of a train; one of those which ran between Temple Mills or wherever, and 'the Southern' (e.g. Hither Green) and v.v., via Stratford, Liv.St.(run-round or re-engine), East London Jn. (Shoreditch 'LT') and the East London line.

The last Ex-LNER 4-4-0s perished in 1961. A pity, as for me it was a favourite wheel arrangement.

The GC Directors hung on until 1960 with the last active ones working during the summer months only out of Sheffield.

Stored in the open for the rest of the year they were in a very poor shape at the end.

Here are some pictures I took of them at Sheffield Darnall in April 1960.
