Really looks the business. Mick's lining out finishes it off nicely (why did Bachmann only do half? A mystery) and your weathering brings a high level of realism. That plank with track looks good Tom, is that your new plank for posing models on?

I've had a plank for a bit, it even has a length of P4 track on it from my earlier musings last year. Ironically the photo is posed in a position where you will eventually be in the layout shed.S.A.C. Martin wrote:Really looks the business. Re: 2750 (Tom's) Workbench-North Eastern Modelling 1938
Morning all
I've been going through the mundane task of drilling holes in the bottom of spring side lamps. My mixed traffic and goods locos will require use of the top lamp iron for hauling Class B Goods. I replaced the lower lamp irons with staples as the original are far too wide. Th top lamp iron, although nice is two close to the smokebox to allow clearance for a lamp.
I have now replaced this as a staple, granted it resembles the Bachmann lamp iron less, but is far more practical and robust.
and with LNER Class B classification
Awaiting her text run on a Class B Goods this Sunday on a suitable layout. I've also added a Smith hook on the rear so it can be coupled to my 3 link stock.

Re: 2750 (Tom's) Workbench-North Eastern Modelling 1938
Afternoon
Who uses a wardrobe for clothes???? I've recently gone through a rocky patch with thoughts about giving up the hobby. Thankfully this has past and a full reorganising of my stock was in order. I've worked out I've around 15 A4s and 10 A1s (a number of those are still in donor condition, yet to be renumbered and weathered).
I now have a total 66 Hornby Gresley Carriages, which will be all donors to have replacement etched sides (MJT and Bill Bedford).
I've also decided to open 'Thirsk South's' operating period out to 1936-1939, although the sequence will be based on the Summer 1938 Working Timetable.

I agree - wardrobes make excellent model railway storage facilities. (Spare) beds are where you put clothes...
Glad you're back with us

Thanks Robert. I'm feeling a lot better since we last spoke. Throwing myself into research has really helped.LNER4479 wrote:I agree - wardrobes make excellent model railway storage facilities. (Spare) beds are where you put clothes...

Now how's my plan coming on?

Hi Tom,
I think many of us have moments of doubt and consider their future in the hobby. It's passed several times for me over the years and I'm still playing. Welcome back, it would be a great shame if you moved on.
Regards,
Vernon

Thanks Vernon (and sorry we didn't get to chat much this year a Retford). It's a shame when others in the hobby can have such a negative effect on your love of modelling. The only change now is I wont be posting too much of my stuff on the 'other place'.notascoobie wrote:Hi Tom,

On a different note, I've been rather foolish this last week buying A4s, and now I've just won a super detailed Sir Nigel Gresley Model..... I know I said I didn't need anymore...but I couldn't really help myself.
Saying that, I definitely do not need anymore A4s....can somebody remind me of that next time I say I'm considering another model.

Good morning all from sunny Surrey
Welcome back into the fold, Tom.
I prefer to call wardrobes "Model Railway cupboards". I do have a bed in my spare bedroom, but the rest is model railway.
I find this forum much friendlier than the other side. It is also very helpful, but it is a good that my book allowance is not capped, as following recommendations from this forum, I have bought many books.
Since I got back into modelling and my retirement, my skills have improved, mainly from advice and reading this forum.
As it is a hobby, it is up to you what you build and run. There was a layout displayed on Youtube with Atlantic 3279 running his P1 double headed with another. It looked impressive, but I doubt it ever happened in real life.

Well, I've just sent a parcel of Loco bits 'Down South' for MickB to work his magic. After some attempts at removing tender numerals to replace with metal cut outs, I wasn't happy with the results, so I'm letting Mick do the dirty work.
The clue for what loco this will be would be this item on this loco (loco wasn't mine, but the item in question is).
On Return the loco shall be very lightly weathered (highlighting details).

Re: 2750 (Tom's) Workbench-North Eastern Modelling 1938
Nameplate background colour
I've now come to the conclusion that black nameplate colour on prewar A4s may not be as common as often thought. It is known and made clear in RCTS 2A that the Commonwealth, West Riding and original quartet A4s had chrome plates with red/Maroon backing. However I have now found 3 late 1930s photographs that show bird name examples with red backing, Herring Gull, Wild Swan and Kingfisher. It should be noted all three are from different sheds (Grantham, Kings Cross and Haymarket). My question is, if these these three are red, who's to say others wasn't.
For the moment if I don't have a colour photographic example do I possibly leave black or repaint maroon?
What I am going to do is repaint the nameplate colour maroon on all current red ones to match the wheels. I read somewhere that the back colour was darker than that on the late 1950s nameplates, and if one looks at the current 4489 livery, this would suggest the same.

What are those boxes at the top containing the A1s and A4s? Where do you get them from and what are they like inside?2750 wrote: Who uses a wardrobe for clothes????

These, I think. You can pick them up from most large traders at shows. Plain cardboard inside or at the most a single thin layer of foam on the bottom. East enough to add your own extra protective material.
