From memory, it being last August [2012] I was through, just like the "other" platform at Gypsy Lane it had a wooden extension, which was demolished. The section opposite the surviving platform at Castleton is stone faced with an alotment on the actual surface. Both platforms at Gypsy Lane being wooden as per the old platforms at West Monkseaton and Seaburn. Both of which have been converted to concrete slab based but in the same "style" as the old timber ones.

The main point being that as with platform 2 at Whitby replacing/repairing any platforms would be included within any grant aid that could be obtained.

Planning etc up to now but I understand that physical work on site starts next week.

Various completion target dates have been mentioned and the consensus seems to be this year possibly June / July.

Some cracking photos, work is coming along nicely

I am hoping to take a short break up Whitby next month if SWMBO is agreeable, but looks like it wont be in service by then so I will have to wait until next year to arrive in platform 2

I think that once this project is finished, it should get a nomination for one of the Heritage awards, it will certainly bring more visitors into Whitby

Another thought that occurs to me, once complete, how about one of those regular mid week charter specials from York into Whitby, it could pull into Platform 1, a NYMR train could be in 2 waiting to take anyone upto Pickering, then charter could then be taken upto Grosmont for the loco to be serviced. This would then in future lead to a turntable been fitted at Grosmont, or I have a vivid imagination!!

I digress, well done so far to all the hard working people involved

And of course if the old platform hadn't been demolished it would have saved everyone a lot of work and expense. :evil:

And of course if the Beeching cuts hadn't happened the BR deficit would eventually have bankrupted the whole country.

Beeching was a false economy. It produced the "Domino Effect" whereby interchange stations would lose passengers further down the line and so on.

Also the UK currently has a National Debt of £1.3 Trillion (that's £1,300 Million) which are currently paying the interest only on at about £40 billion a year. We can never hope to pay off the debt itself and are effectively bankrupt in all but name.I doubt whether keeping the Cirencester Town branch open would have made much difference to that.

As to Beeching, a lot was destroyed in general in the 1960's zero look towards the future needs. Petrol was dirt cheap and the country's population wasnt growing like it is today.

Then the platforms on the NYMR couldn't have been extended......

Even if it hadn't been been demolished back then, it would have had to been totally rebuilt now to comply with group standards.
