"Vintage LNER" Magazine

Post by richard »

I've just received the latest issue of "Vintage LNER". I'm guessing a lot of readers here aren't aware of this publication, so I thought I'd quickly describe it.

"Vintage LNER" used to be called "LNER", and before that "Great Central Link". Published quarterly, it is A5, glossy black&white, small print, 32pp.
Barely any adverts (half a page of classifieds in this one!).

Articles tend to be long, and often with new photos.
This issue has "The 3.40pm and Other Fast Goods Trains" (fast goods operations in 1936); "LNER Letters", "The Story of the LNER Number Plate", and "A Note on the Origin of the Hush-Hush" (why was it such a secret?)

Cost is GBP7 (+GBP3 for airmail) for a year, published by (and cheques to):

Owen Russell,
30 Hollincross Lane,
Glossop
SK13 8JQ

Sounds good. Also, I have the exceptionally good book 'LNER 150' by Patrick Whitehouse and David St John Thomas. I would highly recommend it.

One of the book dealers who appears a a lot of shows in the north of England usually has it. On the occasions I've purchased copies it's been a very good read.

Edit - Bill Hudson Books, he was at Wakefield.

Yes, I've bought from him but he's not got a complete set. Was thinking of buying direct and hopefully picking up the whole lot

No telephone number and no e-mail address for Owen Russell - strictly an adherent to the Wild Swan school of publishing.

Back numbers from issue 13 are available, and photocopies only of issues 1 to 12, all at a cost of £2 each, post-free.

After 18 years worth of publication( 4 per year), this magazine is now no longer to be published.

Latest issue no 71 will be the last that Owen Russell will do. He has back issues of many of the magazines, mainly more recent issues, and these can be obtained from him at 30 Hollincross Lane, Glossop SK13 7NU.

An update that I'd posted under Classifieds in case you missed it

Vintage LNER Magazine
Post by STAFFORDA4 » Sun Nov 04, 2018 8:58 pm

I have acquired 30 of these rare but informative mags issues 30 to 59 incl.
Please PM me if you require any; prices are reasonable
A note to all however is that content, as in the title, is very much pre-war LNER with topics thoroughly covered. The author, Mr Owen Russell is a delight to read if you are keen on anything bearing pre 1946 numbering
Thanks
Eric
NB it seems that production of this title has recently ceased

Thanks for the info that Owen is discontinuing Vintage LNER.

I'm not actually sure when I last received one as I can't locate my copies of 68, 69 and 70 but I expect they're around somewhere?
