L1/L3 BR numbers and allocations

Post by Chris Grouse »

Can anybody furnish me with a list of BR numbers for the ex GC L1/L3 locomotives? I would also like to know where they were allocated between nationalisation and withdrawal in 1955.
Also which liveries did they carry post 1948? Any photographs would also be excellent!

A series of about 50 books covering many of the details you might want for LNER locos from 1923-1948
It includes shedding details, different numbers, rebuilding dates, and also a fine number of photos.

The are available from Booklaw in Nottingham, and if you buy a reasonable number, there is a discount of about 25-30%
Check their website, and click on the Yeadon link

I'd love to, but I don't have the room or the funds to buy that many books! Hence my asking on this forum.

Good morning all
The biggest postwar allocation of the L1 were Frodlingham and Neasden.
Their livery was probably plain black.

From Chris Banks' 'British Railways Locomotives 1948'

The book confirms 50c list of L3 69050- 69069 (no 69063)

Woodford Halse (2)
Mexborough (4)
Neasden (Aylesbury and Chesham) (8)
Frodingham (2)
Northwich (1)

If this is useful I can give you the numbers per Depot.

The BR Database site also has information

http://www.brdatabase.info/

For example the fleet pages for the Robinson "1B" (LNER L1/L3) No. 69050 (ex-272/5272/9050) allocated to MEX (Mexborough) on 30/04/1947, then to WDF (Woodford Halse) on 17/08/1947, remaining allocated there until withdrawal on 12/03/1955.
