1960s wallpaper paste advert and a Blackie 5?
Does anyone remember a television advert for Solvite wallpaper paste during the mid 1960s of a Black 5 loco being covered totally in wallpaper???.
I presume this television advert exists somewhere on the web?. It must have been filmed very close to the end of steam on B.R. sometime between 1966-68?.

45212 was the loco and it was done in preservation, on the KWVR.

It was post end of steam as 45212 was one of the last in ordinary service in August 1968 and went to the KWVR afterwards. I remember it being shown on the box around 1970, part of a long running series that Solvite did, usually involving extreme applications.

Don't tell the missus you've been thinking about wallpaper lately, she'll have you doing the whole house, Micky. My mate's missus was like that. His house was like the Forth Bridge!

Thanks for that link; I have not seen that for 40+ years, but I wonder why it appears on a Russian site?

Indeed when 5212 was restored last time round at Grosmont on the NYMR, fragments of the paper were found still stuck to obscure out of the way places on the engine.

Both sides were wallpapered as I recall. It was also a red flock wallpaper on a gold background of the sort still seen frequently in the cheaper Indian restaurants.Micky wrote:Yeah i bet it was BB.Blink Bonny wrote:Ah - I was there!. Was only one side of the Black 5 wallpapered?.
There's some 'talk' about this advert on another railway website from a few years back one guy reckons that he's got the advert recorded as first being shown on british telly in February 1970 (like Andy W said it was) although one or two other guy's thought it was first shown on the telly in 1969?.

I just knew with the amount of knowledge on here that we would "solve it"
Possible reason for the film being on a Russian site - Anna Glypta was one of their spies?
Or maybe they thought it was an anagram of soviet?
