NBR Boiler.

Post by neilgow »

Some friends of mine have been taken with the idea of reproducing a Beyer-Peacock 2-6-0 of the type that operated on the Midland and South Western Junction Rly. between Cheltenham and Andover.

Many drawings have been aquired via M.O.S.I. and a Museum in Australia. Sister engines being exported all over the Empire.

Two loco's existed, one survived in to GWR days, being scrapped in the 1930's. The other was sold for scrap in 1914 but due to WW1 it was overhauled in Scotland, we are led to believe at the NBR Cowlairs Works. A spare boiler from stock was fitted. It finished its time with the Cramlington coal company before being scrapped in the 1940's.

Now, I do not believe the NBR would have designed a new boiler for a one off. What we would like to know, or find a sensible source of information, is what type of NBR boiler was fitted? Once the boiler type is identified, it might be possible to source a set of drawings from perhaps the NRM. Quite alot of NBR loco's survived well into BR days so we may just be lucky. Until we can identify the NBR loco type we are a bit stuck as to where to look.

Would anyone be able to point us in the right direction. I know it a long shot but you never know.

Many thanks.

Yes, that's her OK. I don't suppose you have any drawings tucked under the back bedroom mattress or even your back pocket.

Many thanks for taking time to reply.

I think there was something about the loco as rebuilt in an SLS Journal, possibly with drawings. I haven't checked Wikipidea but in the wonderful book "Mainline to Industry' which records and has photos of just about every ex mainline loco in industrial service ever, it has the following, rather lengthy, note, under a picture of Hartley Main no 16, 'There was not much left of the original Beyer Peacock loco when this picture was taken. It is thought the frames of MSWJ 14 went to Cashmore's of Cardiff (not Wake's of Darlington as previously documented) whilst her boiler remained in Cheltenham, where it was intended to install it at High St shed to provide hot water for washing out. In response to the war effort, the parts were reunited at NBR's Cowlairs works in 1915 in an attempt to resurrect the old loco but the boiler was condemned by an inspector. Instead, she reappeared in 1916 with an NBR boiler, new smokebox and cab, and secondhand tender, and was sent to work traffic between the NBR main line and Rosyth docks. J F Wake of Darlington had her for sale in October 1918 and she was subsequently bought by the Cramlington Coal Co (no 15). In 1919 she was rebuilt by them and was used to run to the staithes at Percy Main, later passing to Hartley Main Collieries (no 16) and broken up 8/43. PS The Midland Railway's 2516 was a US built mogul. I think the GN had some at the same time. Rather different in appearance.
