Oh Dear! Those armchair experts having a go at each other - isn't it all a bit tiresome? Internet warriors at their very worst.

It's a derailment not affecting a passenger line or a passenger train and an obvious failure on the parties involved to carry out the rules correctly. No doubt the railway concerned will be doing the appropriate enquiry, repairing the loco and also repairing any track components that were also damaged. Job done.

I can't see myself the RAIB being at all interested in this one. I'm not sure it's even notifiable to them but if I was the GCR I probably would have done it, just to make sure.

P.s. it's a cracking instructional film as to how a set of traps work in anger!

certainly an ooooooooooppppsss!!!! but a splendid view of trap / catch points in action.

cue interviews with neither tea nor biscuits.

I feel sorry that the signaller / driver have been tried "by internet" over this incident, rather than just the appropriate authorities - especially as there have been a lot of "armchair experts" holding forth in various places on the internet.

Although I believe that I am correct in saying that 46521 was re-railed quickly, I expect that there will be "some mess" to clear up on the track and damage to the loco / tender.

The brief damage report I received was that upon inspection only the tender brake gear was seen to be damaged in the incident. The loco to tender drawbar had to be gas axed to allow the loco and tender to be re-railed. The cab roof and various fittings were removed for the re-railing. A spare drawbar is said to be in the stocks at Loughborough

Very strange, I saw no sign of life in the signalbox either before or after the incident, was it manned? I will not say personed nor will I call them signallers (they stand on ships and wave flags). Stuff political correctness!

I also expected to see the signalman appear waving a red flag rather frantically but he never appeared.

The signalman gave consent for the locomotive to advance through the stop - obviously without checking the catch points, although one assumes the points onto the road were set correctly

This is a disgraceful incident with no excuse on either side. The loco should not have passed 'red' in any circumstances. What if something similar had happened with a passenger working?
