The most extreme example of this I've seen is on the Pateley Bridge branch where a section of embankment near Ripley was put back after it had been illegally removed by a neighbour.Wavey wrote:Boris wrote:So thats another line taken over by cyclists that will never see rails again
Whilst I disagree with some of Sustrans policies and the way that they have been obstructive to some potential heritage rail developments, surely it can only be good that they have taken over the upkeep of major items of rail infrastructure that would otherwise decay and have to be demolished?
True but you have to wonder what the Midsomer Norton group could have done with that £4 million and what return in terms of tourism they would have produced?Wavey wrote:Boris wrote:So thats another line taken over by cyclists that will never see rails again

It would never get this money though. The cycle routes thing is driven by political ideology, ie the need of councils and local authorities to be seen "doing something for the environment" and helping people keep fit.sawdust wrote:The heritage movement needs to be better at lobbying. It needs to get across its contribution to the economy, not only in terms of tourism. But also how much is spent in the engineering, manufacturing and other sectors.
Sawdust.
How many Tesco's, Sainsburies or McDonalds can the market stand? Maybe more heritage railways simply generates more business?Coboman wrote:How many more preserved railways can the market stand though? There got to be a limit before existing ones are affected.
CVR by any chance?Rlangham wrote:I think it's probably achieved that already, and ageing volunteers may speed up the process (although that said there seems to be more and more younger volunteers on many lines) - i've visited some lines that have left me wondering why i'd bothered, especially one which previously had a great atmosphere but is now some very tatty stations and a combination of Mk 1's/Mk 2's hauled by either their one useable steam locomotive or 'heritage' diesels
I seem to remember comments like that back in the 70s.Coboman wrote:How many more preserved railways can the market stand though? There got to be a limit before existing ones are affected.
In that case the market can stand a lot more preserved railways.Coboman wrote:I wasn't commenting, I was asking a question.
