I think you've found an L2:

Built by Hally using parts designed by Maunsell, for the Metropolitan Railway as Class K 2-6-4T.

Note the front pony truck has become detached.

I think you are right. There is very little information regarding the picture though, other that it was taken in the 30's.

It's a Southern "River" class, photographed after the derailment at Sevenoaks on 24th August 1927.

The infamous crash at Sevenoaks would make sense considering the locomotive's errr position. Were there any visible differences between the original Maunsells and the L2s?
